August Spotlight on…

Terri Phelps
What type of business are you in?
How did you get into that field?

Promotional Product Industry.
Currently I am the only CAS (Certified Advertising Specialist) in South Dakota; less than 4% of industry professionals obtain their certification.  I have two national awards for client promotions one is the Pyramid Award for Best Client Promotion from Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) and the other is the MasterMind Award for Best Creative use of Promotional Products. I love helping my clients develop creative promotional advertising programs that help them meet and exceed there marketing goals.  I love my job and never feel like I have to go to work - I go to Fun.  What isn't fun about promotional products?

Not only am I involved with Women's Network, I am President of Networking Professional Life: I am the owner of Phelps AdSpecialties with over 18 years in the Professionals of RC,  the current chair of RC Chamber's Ambassador Committee, a Summer Nights Board Member and a 2013 Leadership Rapid City graduate. I also sit on the Pennington County Mental Health Board - the only formal use of my BS in Psychology.

Family Life: My parents, my younger brother, Mike and I moved to Rapid City when I was 14 years old.  Being military we moved every 2-3 years;  I never thought I would live Rapid City long enough to graduate from Stevens High let alone stay years after.  However, I met my husband Doug, in 9th grade Biology and we have been married 26 years. We have two boys, John (22yrs) who is currently at St. Cloud State University in MN. and Mason (20yrs) and at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN.  With boys, our house revolved around sports. As they grow up I was the Soccer Mom/Coaches Wife, the Baseball Mom/Coaches Wife, the Football Mom/Coaches Wife, and for the last 16 years a Hockey Mom/Coaches Wife.  I would say being a Hockey Mom was the best! During all the years of watching the boys play I developed a passion for photography (ok I'm a paparazzi) and I love to scrapbook - and have the albums to prove it.  Now with the boys in MN my life has gone to the dogs - yes, we have three; a Beagle - Cooper (5yrs), a Black Lab - Ivy (1.5yrs) and a mini Australian Sheppard - Molly (1yr).  Molly was unplanned; John's puppy - good thing she is cute! We obviously spend a lot of time outside playing Frisbee, going for walks and playing Frisbee...and playing Frisbee.  I enjoy dog training and will be taking Molly to puppy school this fall - she is just so cute! I have photos if you want to see.

In this next stage of my life, the empty nest stage, I'm not exactly sure what I will be doing. I know I will have less laundry, more food in the fridge and lower utility bills... so more fun!

Member Enrollment Incentives
We all benefit from new faces

Rapid City Women’s Network is a great place to meet and do business with other professional women.   It is an environment where women of all ages come to meet, network and socialize with other women within the business community.  Not only does it support local female business professionals, it creates long lasting personal friendships as well.  As a professional group, like any other, we want to spread the word about this amazing group of women. However, the success of RCWN will only develop with the help of all members and in the long run, we will all benefit by increasing the enrollment rate.

With that being said, the RCWN board has decided to offer its members some incentive to help enroll new members to this amazing group. We would like to introduce a new concept-Networker of the Year!  Starting August, all group members are encouraged to invite other professional female community members to monthly meetings. Speak with them about the benefits to being a member, such as multiple resources from business connections to personal such as dental, electric and child care. The resources are endless when it comes down to it and we should be excited to offer that to other women.
The incentive is this- the networker with the most enrollments, NOT guests, by end of year will receive a free one year membership to Rapid City Women’s Network and a gift from the board. It is not required but,  encouraged to bring in new faces and expose RCWN to as many women as possible; if a guest doesn’t join word of mouth travels fast.  As wives, mothers, business professionals we are all busy but, we attend monthly meetings for the support and information that helps us grow as professionals and support our fellow members.
