September Providence Urban Refuge Partnership Update
April Alix, Conservation and Education Coordinator

The Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership had a busy summer finishing up August with lots of fun events and activities! We hosted our last week of Nature Camp at Neutaconkanut Park with a CSI: Critter Scene Investigations theme. The campers learned all the tricks of the trade to being “Nature Investigators” by learning how to look for clues and evidence of an animal’s presence in an area, even after they have fled the scene. We also had a wonderful opportunity to host two interns from Rhode Island Colleges’ Upward Bound program! Malory, from Hope High School, and Cristal, from Central High School. Each spent two weeks of their summer interning with a variety of partners with the Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership, including some PlayCorps workers, Art Camp, Nature Camp, and even made some trips down to South County to shadow some US Fish and Wildlife Service members! We loved having them at our sites and hope they’ll join our team next year! One of the more unique events we held was a program that explored Entomophagy – the science behind eating bugs. Guest speaker Kiah Brasch came to Father Lennon Park AKA Camden Ave. Park to explain the benefits of eating bugs to the park visitors. They even made some food with bugs as a main ingredient for all to try! We munched on Chocolate “Chirp” Cookies with grasshoppers and Banana-Mealworm Muffins. Overall consensus was: bugs are delicious! We even took a hike around the park to find what bugs called Camden Ave. Park home ...but we didn’t eat any of them! Overall, we’ve had a very rewarding summer and look forward to working with schools coming this fall.

The Earth Day Spring Cleaning 2014 Video is Here!

Google Groups
Our tech Guru, Geoff Meek has set up a Google group so that we can chat directly with each other. Our discussion groups are here.
 You will need:
- An account with Google (Gmail, etc.)
- To request membership to the Partnership for Providence Parks group.
Once your membership is accepted (takes about 1/2 day), simply respond to one of the existing topics, or click the "New Topic" button at the top of the screen.
Using groups is just like using email, with the benefit that all members can view and respond to your messages. The group is also searchable, so you can find out what has been discussed in the past.
If you haven't signed up yet, or are having trouble with it, let Wendy know.
