President's Corner

Fellow ASHRAE Roanoke Chapter Members,

I sincerely hope you have enjoyed a great summer!  It is hard to believe it already September and the trees will begin to change colors in few weeks.

I would like to take the time to first thank you for your continued involvement with our local chapter.  I would also like to thank you for the opportunity to serve you again as chapter president for the second term.  During the 2013-2014 year with your help we were able to provide technical seminars, host a golf tournament, provide students with scholarships, and more.  I am grateful to everyone who helped contribute to make it a great year.

During the year we also lost our President-Elect Jon Colledge and Vice President Anna Stanley as they both moved to other states.  For this reason the Board of Governor’s discussed our path forward and decided it was in the best interest of the chapter to re-nominate the president and nominate a new President-Elect to move into the Presidential role in 2015-2016.  I am grateful to have Past Presidents Patrick Castelvecchi, Patrick Murdock, and Dan Lieber volunteering to be nominated as chapter officers this year.  We will have our formal election prior to the start of our September meeting, so please come out to vote. I would also like to thank Past President Kyle Longbrake for spearheading our efforts to establish remote broadcasts to enable the chapter to better cover our large geography.

With the change in chapter leadership positions, it is even more evident that without member participation through volunteerism the chapter cannot flourish.  I would like to the theme of 2014-2015 year to be “Our Roanoke ASHRAE – Making a Difference”.  I would challenge you to see give a small amount of time out of your busy schedule to give back.  Whether it be volunteering as a chapter officer, visiting local K-12 schools, mentoring younger engineers, contributing to ASHRAE standards, giving to ASHRAE research, or other activity I challenge you to give a small portion of your time. Please reach out to myself or one of chapter officers to discuss ways we can make a difference.

Finally I would like to encourage you to come to our September chapter seminar!  Tuesday September 16 at 11:45am we will be discussing “Steam System Design” at Blue 5 restaurant.  We are pleased to have Past Chapter President Calvin Witt present.  Calvin is a seasoned consulting engineer with a wealth of knowledge in the HVAC&R industry.  I am confident you will enjoy Calvin and learn something from the seminar.

Sincerely,
 Wesley
We are trialing remote broadcasts in Lynchburg of the live presentation. The first few meetings in Lynchburg will have complimentary meals as we work out the bugs.

This Month's Speaker...

Calvin Witt will present this month’s program on “Steam Systems”.  This technical presentation is targeted at those in the HVAC and construction industry who are interested in steam systems.  The presentation will cover what is steam and why is it important; design concepts; boiler room design; expansion and support; pipe material; and valve and trap application.  The presentation will conclude with lessons learned and war stories, so bring yours to share.

Calvin was born and raised in Roanoke, and received his BSME from the University of Virginia.  He has 36 years of engineering experience with Architectural-Engineering firms and is a registered professional engineer.  Over the course of his career, he has been a mechanical design engineer, department head, project manager, and is currently a Vice President and the Chief Mechanical Engineer for AECOM.  He is a past president (1987-88) of the Roanoke Chapter of ASHRAE, and has been a member of ASHRAE since 1979.

CRC 2014 Update...

The annual CRC was held August 21st-23rd at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Richmond. Roanoke was represented by Wesley Southall (Delegate), Patrick Castelvecchi (Alternate), Patrick Murdock (Research Promotion), Paul Holloway (CTTC), and Kyle Waltz (Membership Promotion). The chapter brought home two awards from the 2013/14 Society Year: the Premier Presidential Award of Excellence and Full Circle. The Presidential Award of Excellence (PAOE) is a metric Society uses to ensure Chapter Operations align with the goals of Society and the current Society President. The Premier level of award recognizes chapters who have met PAOE every year since 1970 or the chapter's founding, excluding the first year. Full Circle recognizes chapters whose officers have contributed to Research Promotion at the Honor Roll level ($100).

ASHRAE Announces Special Limited Pricing Offer; Changes To In Operation Methodology For BEQ Program

ATLANTA – To allow greater uniformity for building types seeking an In Operation rating under its Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program, ASHRAE is now using methodology from its standard for energy efficiency in existing buildings to calculate the rating.

The bEQ program, a consistent, comprehensive and accurate method of rating and labeling buildings based on energy use, offers two rating labels: an As Designed label that rates the building’s expected energy use under standardized conditions—independent of the building’s occupancy and usage variables—and an In Operation label that rates the building’s actual metered energy use as influenced by the building’s occupancy, structure and usage. bEQ helps owners and managers zero in on opportunities to lower building operating costs and make informed decisions on energy reduction strategies.

Previous to this change, the In Operation rating relied on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager to provide a normalized median energy use index (EUI) for the rating calculation. Unfortunately, this normalization was only available for those buildings that were covered by Portfolio Manager, so all other building types, such as convenience stores, libraries, fire stations and restaurants, had no methodology for this normalization.

“The change to this new methodology provides several advantages for those who are submitting buildings for In Operation ratings,” Ross Montgomery, bEQ Committee chair, said. “The new methodology allows greater uniformity for many more available building types, which should result in better rating comparisons since those buildings are now able to get a normalized energy use index. In addition, submission forms are now easier to use with more of the information/calculation automated and with expanded explanations, definitions and instructions to help better classify a candidate building.”

Montgomery explained that the updated bEQ Workbooks use methodology from one of the informative appendices of Standard 100, Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings.  This methodology allows generation of median EUIs by climate zone for all building types covered in the Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), maintained by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

He notes that similar changes are planned for the As Designed rating, which currently uses Target Finder to calculate the median EUI for normalization.

Given the updated improvements for the In Operation rating, ASHRAE is offering a four month limited offer to qualified ASHRAE members, allowing them to submit for two ratings with no registration/submission fee from July 30, 2014, until Nov. 30, 2014.

The offer is extended to ASHRAE members who are certified by ASHRAE as Building Energy Assessment Professionals (BEAP) or Building Energy Modeling (BEMP) Professionals, or professional engineers (PE) licensed in the jurisdiction where the rated building is located.

For more information on the offer, visit www.buildingenergyquotient.org.

NCEES Removes “Masters or Equivalent” from Model State Law

The National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying held their 2014 annual meeting in Seattle, Washington on August 20-23.  At this meeting, delegates voted to modify the approach to requiring additional education for initial engineering licensure by removing specific language in the NCEES Model Law and Model Rules, originally intended to be effective in 2020. As part of the vote, annual meeting delegates decided to instead develop an official NCEES position statement that supports additional engineering education beyond a bachelor’s degree. Among other actions taken at the annual meeting, NCEES member boards voted to remove its Model Law prerequisite that four years of progressive engineering experience be earned before a licensure candidate can take the final licensing exam, the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam.

For more information on the meeting, go to http://ncees.org/about-ncees/news/ncees-approves-revised-approach-education-initiative/.
