Introduction to Forensics Seminar - Recap

PRISM recently held its annual Introduction to Forensics Seminar, designed to whet the appetites of underclassmen at JJC and our partner community colleges.  A total of 18 students attended the seminar, which gave them a better understanding of what forensic science entails as well as got them thinking now about a major track and an area of research.  To read more about the seminar details and for a link to additional pictures, visit our events page on the PRISM website.

John Jay's 9/11 Commemoration to Include PRISM Student Carlos Texeira

September 11 is a day full of significance for all of us here at John Jay: more than a decade ago on that date we lost 67 students and alumni. John Jay College will hold a ceremony in Memorial Hall during community hour on Thursday, 9/11.  The ceremony will feature poetry and music as well as the reading of the names of our 67 fallen heroes.  As the names are read, 67 students from every John Jay student organization and program will pay their respects by lighting a candle in their names. Our own Carlos Texeira will be representing PRISM at that event. We hope you can join us that afternoon to remember our heroes.

PRISM Office Use and Availability

As many of you know, the PRISM office, 05.61.00 is equipped with a conference table and a smartboard.  We encourage our mentors to use this space for lab meetings.

To ensure availability, simply sign it out using the big calendar on the wall or email prism@jjay.cuny.edu with your day/time request.

PRISM Fall Schedule of Events

PRISM students were emailed a fall PRISM calendar of events.  This included mandatory, optional, recommended, and social events.  To review this calendar and event information, please click here.  Mentors are always welcome to attend!

One of these PRISM events is the September 18 monthly meeting that will include guest speakers from the Harvard School of Public Health.  Students should have received an email invitation to this event, which is mandatory for funded students and they must RSVP by using the doodle link included in the invitation.

Northeast Association of Forensic Scientists (NEAFS) Conference

This year’s NEAFS conference is taking place in Hershey, PA from 11/3-11/6.  If you think you have a student who would benefit from presenting at this conference, please discuss this possibility with the student.  The deadline to submit an abstract is October 1 and early discounted registration ends on 9/15.   For those of you who are less familiar with NEAFS, the conference goes beyond criminalistics and includes sessions for forensic biology, drug chemistry, and toxicology.  Visit the NEAFS website for details.

Jiwon Seo is the Recipient of Competitive Scholarship

Jiwon Seo, PRISM senior, was recently awarded a competitive $2,000 scholarship from the Kimbo Foundation, whose mission is to recognize and encourage students who show exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential for the Korean community, and to provide them with financial support in their endeavor to study.  Jiwon is an excellent student both in the classroom and in the lab, where he conducts his research with mentor, Dr. Demi Cheng.  It is easy to see why he was one of only 27 recipients in the New York region to be selected for this honor, from a pool of 111 applicants.

Scholarship Opportunity for Promising Juniors

If you have a promising junior in your lab, you may want to encourage him or her to purse the NOAA Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions Undergraduate Scholarship Program (USP).  To learn more, visit the PRISM website blog
