IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE UPDATES:

3 NEW JOB-PROTECTED LEAVES OF ABSENCES FOR EMPLOYEES IN ONTARIO

The Employment Standards Amendments Act (Leaves to Help Families) comes into effect on October 29, 2014, offering 3 new job-protected leaves of absence for caregivers in Ontario.  The new legislation builds on the existing Family Medical Leave by creating three new job-protected leaves:

  • Crime-Related Child Death or Disappearance Leave: up to 52 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for parents of a missing child and up to 104 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for parents of a child who has died as a result of a crime.

  • Critically Ill Child Care Leave: up to 37 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to provide care to a critically ill child.

  • Family Caregiver Leave: up to eight weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for employees to provide care or support to a family member with a serious medical condition.
Organizations are encouraged to become familiar with these new Leaves of Absence which accompany 7 other unpaid leaves that exist under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (Ontario).

NEW MINIMUM WAGE IN ONTARIO

As of June 1, 2014, the new general minimum wage for most workers in Ontario is $11.00/hour.  This also pertains to employees who earn some or all of their pay based on commissions.  In other words, commissions earned must amount to at least the minimum wage for each hour the employee has worked.
