Tomorrow - Protest OceanaGold/Pacific Rim

Wed. Sept. 10 @ 12 pm @ First Canadian Place
(100 King Street West)

In October 2013, Canadian/Australian mining company OceanaGold acquired Canadian-based Pacific Rim, a company reviled internationally for its involvement in human rights violations in El Salvador and for suing the small country for $77 million US. OceanaGold acquired the project and increased the lawsuit to $301 million. The case will be heard by an investment dispute tribunal on September 15th. Join us tomorrow in the financial district to get OceanaGold out of El Salvador!

Speakers include Maude Barlow from the Council of Canadians, Xenia Marroquin from El Salvador's Foro del Agua, and MISN's own Monica Gutierrez. Musical performance by Ruben Esguerra.

And whether or not you can join us on the streets..

Statement from Philippine Learning Tour

MISN member Allan Lissner recently participated in a Canadian delegation in the Philippines organized by Kairos. The delegates released the following press statement raising concerns about mining-related human rights violations.

August 6, 2014 We, the Canadian and Philippine delegates of the Philippine Learning Tour, have journeyed as partners to study and investigate the impact of Canadian mining operations in the Zamboanga peninsula.  As persons seeking to promote good stewardship of the environment and respect of human rights for all, including the cultural right of self-determination for Indigenous peoples, we stand together to raise a voice of concern for the potential human rights and environmental impacts of ongoing and impending large-scale mining operations in the region...

Barrick Gold News

Police have been called in again to burn down the homes of so-called "illegal miners" in Papua New Guinea next to Barrick's Porgera Mine. This isn't the first time that security forces have burnt down hundreds of houses next to Barrick's mine, and this recent violent episode underscores the need to meet the community's demand to be resettled away from the dangerous mine site.  Take action to tell Canadian representatives and the PNG Prime Minister that the people of Porgera, Papua New Guinea have gone through too much red tape, and the time to resettle them is now!

STATEMENT: The Diaguita Huascoaltinos Remain Against Barrick's Pascua Lama Project

In light of news of a potential negotiated agreement that would put an end to the social and environmental conflicts generated by the Pascua Lama project in the ancestral territory of the Agricultural Community of Diaguitas Huascoaltinos, we declare that this only deepens the relationship of confrontation that Barrick Gold has imposed in its relationship with the Community that owns the communal property of Diaguita. read more >>
