Tomorrow - Protest OceanaGold/Pacific Rim
Wed. Sept. 10 @ 12 pm @ First Canadian Place

In October 2013, Canadian/Australian mining company OceanaGold acquired Canadian-based Pacific Rim, a company reviled internationally for its involvement in human rights violations in El Salvador and for suing the small country for $77 million US. OceanaGold acquired the project and increased the lawsuit to $301 million. The case will be heard by an investment dispute tribunal on September 15th. Join us tomorrow in the financial district to get OceanaGold out of El Salvador!
Speakers include Maude Barlow from the Council of Canadians, Xenia Marroquin from El Salvador's Foro del Agua, and MISN's own Monica Gutierrez. Musical performance by Ruben Esguerra.

Resistance to Barrick Gold: A Conversation with Jethro Tulin
Come meet Jethro Tulin, an organizer at the centre of a campaign against Barrick Gold in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Jethro Tulin is a popular organizer and founder of the Akali Tange Association (ATA), a human rights organization documenting abuses at the Porgera mine, owned by Toronto's Barrick Gold.

Statement from Philippine Learning Tour
MISN member Allan Lissner recently participated in a Canadian delegation in the Philippines organized by Kairos. The delegates released the following press statement raising concerns about mining-related human rights violations.
August 6, 2014 - We, the Canadian and Philippine delegates of the Philippine Learning Tour, have journeyed as partners to study and investigate the impact of Canadian mining operations in the Zamboanga peninsula. As persons seeking to promote good stewardship of the environment and respect of human rights for all, including the cultural right of self-determination for Indigenous peoples, we stand together to raise a voice of concern for the potential human rights and environmental impacts of ongoing and impending large-scale mining operations in the region...

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED!
The Canadian International Institute for the Extractive Industries and Development – the CIIEID – is a federal government-commissioned, university-hosted think tank to support the competitive advantage of mining, oil, and gas companies based in Canada, mandated to meddle in developing countries’ policies, legislation, and regulatory implementation. A group of UBC and SFU students, mining justice activists, environmentalists, and members of various Vancouver diaspora communities are raising critical concerns about the new extractive industries development institute (the CIIEID).
