Fall, 2014: What's new and noteworthy in the art world

Tomma Abts at David Zwirner As the fall season approaches, a “trophy culture” in the art world continues unabated. The high end of the market is robust. One significant, market force has been  the proliferation of online sellers and auctions. For example, Sotheby’s recently teamed up with eBay. Per Sotheby’s web site, “the venture will start by streaming live auctions from Sotheby's New York headquarters, allowing ‘real-time bidding from anywhere around the world’. Another sales and marketing phenomenon: pop up exhibition spaces launched by galleries to promote less expensive and emerging artists. In Los Angeles some entrepreneurial dealers have invested in large warehouse spaces, which can be utilized both for storage and showcasing monumental sculptures.

Interest in three-dimensional artworks, including sculpture and ceramics, is now an established trend. There is a new following for textiles, which were very popular in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, now in a variety of formats. The upcoming show at the Drawing Center Thread Lines features contemporary artists presenting textiles in innovative executions.

Demand for artworks in all media is still strong. We continue to advise clients seeking value to look at 19th and 20th century works on paper, 19th and 20th century American paintings as well as American realist paintings from the 1930's and 40's. As always, there are still good buys to be found in emerging artists from the Americas and Europe.

One of the highlights of the fall season will be the sale of Mrs. Paul Mellon's collection at Sotheby’s, featuring over 2000 works of fine art, jewelry and furniture. The Mellon family, of course, were long-standing patrons of the arts, and the family helped establish the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Art Advisory continues to advise clients to pursue works that are undervalued but well-regarded over time or, alternatively, to pursue up-and-coming, undiscovered artists showing great promise for their talents. The best collection strategy is to stay well-informed and self-educated, and visit the best quality exhibitions.

Barring any disasters in the United States, expect the high end of the art market to continue, while the middle market will be bumpy, and the lower end will be speculative.

Please check out our Art Events section to view some upcoming exhibitions in the US and Europe that promise to be outstanding.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions about sound acquisition strategies and where we think the market is today.

And remember - Enjoy the hunt. Buy what you love!
