Here's what's happening this month at Gloucester Rd WI.

NEW VENUE

It's with regret that we've left BTP so abruptly but we're looking forward to moving into our new home this month!

As most of you know, we found out about new restrictions on Boston Tea Party's license last month and were starting to look for ideas for a new venue. We were quite surprised to get a call last week saying the council had told them there was to be no one on the premises after 8pm. It meant that we couldn't even have our next meeting there as they'd be in breach of their license.

So we looked at a couple of alternatives and decided we had to spread our wings a little beyond Gloucester Road. It was after talking to The Friends of Horfield Common we thought about trying the Ardagh on Horfield Common. So that's where we're going to be for September's meeting and it may even become our new base if we get good feedback.

So we now meet at The Ardagh Bowling & Sports Club, on Horfield Common. We start at 8pm but you can arrive from 7.30pm. You can also get a drink and have a mingle beforehand and after the meeting. There is ample parking if you're driving too.

If you have any alternative ideas for venues you wish us to explore, just let us know at the meeting. We'll aim to vote on our new 'permanent' home at October's AGM.

NEW SPEAKER!*

As if it wasn't bad enough that we had to find a new place, our September speaker dropped out too (and October's come to mention it)! But we've replaced him (and October's) and are still in the self-defence/martial arts field.

Spencer Rabey has been training in Cheng Man Ching tai chi and various martial arts for 17 years. He has trained in Malaysia under the Zhong Ding School and is also a qualified teacher and instructor. He has recently started running classes again and one-to-ones from home in Horfield and on the Common.

He'll be showing us some basic self-defence techniques which might not be what you expect! He'll also be introducing us to tai chi (itself a martial art). Please bring a pen and paper along and wear something comfortable.

(*The image is Cheng Man Ching, not Spence.)
We're organising an axe and knife throwing outing on 8 November at 2pm. Venue TBC. All members welcome, we've had ten sign up so far and the capacity is 10 or 20 (one tutor can do groups of ten). The cost is £20 per person and all equipment, insurances, risk assessments are included. No open toed foot wear please!

If you're interested or have already signed up, please bring your £20 to the meeting to confirm your spot (we need to book for ten or twenty to go ahead, so you may be on a waiting list until we get the numbers). We'll also be taking payments at October's meeting.

And finally...
Will GRWI exist next year?

It's up to you! There will be big changes at this year's AGM in October with all the key committee positions up for grabs and if they are not filled, there will be no GRWI next year.

We've had a look at the roles and how they've developed this year. From October, we'll be looking for members to fill the following positions with your own personal flair!

• President chairs the meetings
• Secretary writes up minutes, postal correspondence and Avon/National relations
• Treasurer the woman with the cheque book, does the monthly banking and books
• Assistant treasurer helps treasurer at meetings and when treasurer away
• Online manager in charge of website, Facebook, Twitter
• Online correspondence email and monthly mailing
• Programme co-ordinator books some speakers, meets and greets, reminds and thanks
• Meeting logistics planning set up of meetings and sorting materials
• Members at large mucking in for any of the above and anything extra

The committee meet once a month for a couple of hours in the evening, a week or so before the main meeting. It can be in a pub or someone's house, it can be anywhere you fancy.

The first thing the new committee looks at is next year's programme (from the various suggestions over the year and any extra ideas we have). It's a fun thing to get started on and get to know each other.

So please have a serious think as to whether you can spare a couple of hours a month to help on the committee. We have a maximum of 12 spaces so there's plenty to go round and share work. The three mandatory roles are president, secretary and treasurer, without which, we can't continue as a WI so please come forward and help out as these are all up for grabs. It is a commitment though so you are agreeing to be on the committee for 12 months and come to the committee and monthly meetings.

If you've got any questions, please just ask at Tuesday's meeting.
