Future of London September 2014 Update

September update – back to school!

Hello all â€“

While still in shock over the blink of an eye that was August, we're very much looking forward to the two Leaders courses about to launch: Future London Leaders Round 8, starting 24th Sept, and Leaders Plus Round 2, starting 30th Sept. Always good to meet the new cohorts and mentors! To meet member demand for training, we'll be adding a third FLL round next year; more on that soon.

Not to be left behind, the Alumni Network is building steam, with its second event on borough capacity coming up on 17th Sept, hosted by Overbury, and two Steering Group alumni rep spaces opening up â€“ we'll be inviting expressions of interest shortly. Huge thanks to Holly Mann and Philippa Bloomfield for their time and effort in getting things off the ground!

As you'll see from the partial listing below, we've got a slew of interesting events lined up this autumn; sign up soon if you see something you like. In the meantime, hope to see some of you at the NHF conference in Birmingham on 18th Sept; I'll be chairing a session on the G15's interesting Real London Lives project.

On that housing note, I'll close by welcoming our newest member, Circle Housing Group – delighted to have them in the network!

Thanks, and see you out there â€“

Programme Highlights

London 2050 Infrastructure Plan

London 2050
Following our Grow Up or Grow Out? event in June, we continue to explore the spatial and practical aspects of growth in a series of events on the London 2050 Infrastructure Plan. We'll explore working beyond boundaries, infill development, and value capture in three senior roundtables, while on 26th Nov we host a half-day conference, Surface Tension: Underground London's impact on the world above.

Engaging the Private Rented Sector

PRS
As part of our ongoing research project on engaging private landlords in energy efficiency, we will hold two research seminars on 2nd and 23rd October. Sponsored by EDF Energy, these seminars will provide pan-London policy updates and an opportunity to share cross-sector experiences of delivering domestic retrofit in PRS properties across the Capital. To register, email events@futureoflondon.org.uk.

Communities in Transition

Colindale
After our successful visit to the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area, we are pleased to announce the sixth field trip in our Communities in Transition series, to Colindale, LB Barnet. This visit will focus on placemaking efforts, including in the Grahame Park estate renewal programme, and Barnet's new Open Space Strategy. More details here.

Tackling Low Pay in London

Tackling Low Pay
Over 1m people in London live in low income households, with 17% of the Capital's jobs classed as 'low pay'. Our 16th October seminar, Tackling Low Pay in London, will present pan-London and local approaches to addressing London’s in-work poverty, and generate discussion on the most effective ways to support this effort. For more details, including how to register, visit our website.
