Blood Red Shoes looking quite drowned in sound at Reading Festival

Drowned in August

Yes, it really is the first of September today, so here's a digest of the best of August and some stuff from July too.

Hello you. We've had a very busy summer at DiS HQ, so much so that we forgot to do a mailout last month. Blame it on the sunshine or maybe the superb moonshine... And now we will make up for this shoddy behaviour by compiling an all-killer no filler mailout.

Prince features on this month's playlist

The best of DiS from the past eight weeks, as chosen by our editor...
Why do UK festivals have so few female headliners?
“If you watch something like X Factor you see a million girls wanting to sound like Beyoncé or Rihanna or Adele - maybe if there were more women playing in bands then there would be more girls wanting to be the bassist or the drummer instead of automatically being the singer. I don't know if I would have had the courage to put everything into a band if it wasn't for all the positive role models I had. Like Babes In Toyland who I saw at the LA2 while I was still at school and it changed my life! That's when I realised I wanted to play like that and wear a dress. The two appealed to me very much.”
Laura-Mary, Blood Red Shoes

The Telegraph recently pointed out that there aren’t really any women headlining the UK’s major festivals this year. And, when you start to look into it, there aren’t really many women playing the main stages of British festivals this year. And, actually, when you think about it, there aren’t really all that many women even playing British festivals this year. Kate Solomon dug out some "interesting" stats and caught up with Laura-Mary from Blood Red Shoes ahead of their performance on the main stage at Reading.
DiS meets dEUS

An Afternoon with dEUS

Formed at the very tail end of the 1980’s, dEUS are the best group you might never have heard of. The cult band other cult bands love to name check, their 24-year career has been one long, stop-start roller coaster, racing past flirtations with mainstream success, near-total implosions, long hiatuses, and comebacks. Written off or ignored numerous times, Barman and his cohorts have always somehow managed to not just survive but come up smiling, another set of glorious, off-kilter tunes in tow, and I can almost hear the Gallic shrugs and casual incredulity in his voice as he recounts years spent bouncing around the indie scene and their brushes with fame. It is, Derek Robertson discovers in his in-depth conversation, quite the tale. Read on.
Interview with the amazing Lizzo

Amazing New Artist Alert!

Lizzo is an incredible force of nature who also happens to be a badass rapper. She also told us something that might be a bit of a coup. We asked her if she knows Prince, and she said: "HA! Well I’m not saying...but I think you'll find out the answer to your question soon enough..." Read the full interview here.
Interview: Manic Street Preachers

Interview: Manic Street Preachers

“The disenchantment with politics diminishes me as a person,” Nicky Wire explains, “because I’ve always loved politics and been engaged, I used to bunk off school to watch the f*****g Trade Union Congress, which is as boring as you can get. So I don’t feel good about feeling disempowered...” Read the full conversation.
Blink-182 and Feminism
"If you put a certain microscope to anything, you’re going to find what you’re looking for. That microscope will highlight the flaws, the issues and the examples that almost any media will contain; it’s up to you how you digest such issues. If we are aware of such issues, then that in itself is a feat for feminism; if we are discussing these issues, then that is a feat for feminism; if we are constantly questioning our beliefs on gender, culture, stereotypes, then that is a feat for feminism." DiS' Sammy Maine went to see a pop-punk band and then wrote this.
