Company's Article of The Month

The latest political turmoil in Thailand captured the eyes of the world as well as businesses currently present in the Southeast Asian kingdom, as they carefully awaited its possible effects. However, even in the midst of such difficulties, firms such as LawPlus Ltd. continue to thrive. We got a greater look into this success story as DanCham met up with its founder, Mr. Kowit Somwaiya, in the beginning of June this year.

LawPlus has been doing business in Thailand for more than a decade and has many times been praised for its expertise that comes from its extensive knowledge and understanding of the Thai economy, industries, and local practices. This expertise can be especially valuable for foreign firms in Thailand trying to navigate through a legal system, which due to its volatile and complex nature as a newly industrialized country can be both shifty and vastly different from what we see in some place in the West.  LawPlus provides top quality legal services covering areas such as banking and finance, intellectual property rights, FDI projects, employment and regulations concerning different models for setting up your business in Thailand such as joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions amongst others.

Mr. Kowit Somwaiya first and foremost highlighted that a well-planned goal plus a well-structured time frame to achieve the goal is of the essence.  He also emphasized that creating a pleasant work environment for Thai employees will help facilitate work efficiency. He understands that knowing the Thai culture is a key asset when managing one’s business here and that showing consideration for your employees’ values will create mutual appreciation and loyalty.  He, also, likes to keep a friendly tone with his employees by e.g. showing interest in their families.  Family relation is one of the very core values in the Thai society. Naturally, this has to be done with certain “Fingerspitzengefühl”.

Nevertheless, as we enter an era of an evermore globalized economy, LawPlus seems to face an issue also faced by many other companies, i.e. the concern of attracting, training, and retaining skilled personnel.  As the economy in the region grows increasingly fast, both local and international law firms operating in Thailand are now competing for newly graduated and experienced lawyers resulting in the competition in the legal market increasing significantly.  Mr. Kowit Somwaiya revealed that the growth strategy of LawPlus in a five-year period is to expand into other ASEAN countries, such as Indonesia and Singapore, and beyond after opening LawPlus Myanmar Ltd. in 2013.
