CHMTA President's Letter, Akiko Yamazaki

Dear Teachers,

I hope your year is off to a great start. It's a great privilege and honor to serve you as your CHMTA President. Laurel Siviglias and the outgoing board has done a tremendous job growing the organization, and we have great momentum moving forward. I have a special connection to Chapel Hill from doing my undergraduate music study at UNC, and I consider it my home. CHMTA was so warmly inviting to me when I returned to Chapel Hill as a new teacher and has provided such encouragement and inspiration for me and my students.

I look forward to continuing the work of the organization and contributing to music. One of the things I hope to do during my term is to increase the communication among the members and to connect with the greater musical community. In this area, I believe there is significant potential to foster a vibrant musical community for the future.

I'm thrilled about the many wonderful opportunities we're offering this year, including programs, student recitals, Festival, Playathon, Pearl Seymour Celebration Recital, teacher recitals and more. We also offer services like online listing and teacher referrals. Please make sure to check out our website, if you haven't already done so, and we will keep you posted with newsletters. Our first association meeting will be the Meet and Greet. I hope you will join us!

I appreciate your trust and confidence in the board. Please don't hesitate to contact me anytime. I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions.

Sincerely,
Akiko Yamazaki

Complete Your Profile on CHMTA.org
For the 2014-2015 season I have put up profiles for all members of the CHMTA. However, less than half are complete and most have only a name and phone number.

We have found by talking to people in the community that simply supplying a list of teacher names is not helpful to parents and potential students looking to find a teacher.

We found that the most helpful piece of information is the location of the teacher.

Take a look at Akiko's profile to see what info is needed from you:

http://www.chmta.org/teacher_directory/akiko-yamazaki/

I need: a listing of your degrees (degrees, topic and institution); a short bio; specific instruments and styles taught; the three Chapel Hill Carrboro Schools closest to your studio location (elementary, middle, high school); the closest named neighborhoods near your studio and the neighborhood that your studio is located in; whether you give in-home (house call) lessons; contact info: email address, phone (indicate if texts can be sent to the phone number), website address and Facebook and twitter addresses.

Submit your info to bill@jazzpianoonline.com.
A Note from Our Treasurer, Margery Gates
If you have not paid your dues, or become a friend ($15.00 to CHMTA PO Box 3504, Chapel Hill, NC 27515)  this will be your last newsletter. I will be sending out one reminder to those people who have not paid.
Margery Gates, Treasurer CHMTA.

UNC Etude Festival Oct. 26th to Nov. 2nd
The UNC Etude Festival will explore the etude as a musical genre, from its origins in the technical and musical study pieces of the nineteenth century through its contemporary use as a vehicle for compositional exploration. The festival will reflect the vibrancy of the etude tradition through a wide variety of performances by UNC faculty and students, culminating in a premiere of African American composer Leslie Adams’  Piano Etudes, which blend a neo-romantic classical style with influences from popular and jazz traditions.

Festival dates:  Sunday Oct. 26, 7:30 PM:  UNC Music Faculty Recital
Tuesday Oct. 28, 7:30 PM:  Student Recital
Wednesday Oct. 29, 4 PM:  Student Recital
Saturday Nov. 1, 8 PM:  Guest Artist Recital:  Maria Corley, pianist, performing Part I of Leslie Adams’ Piano Etudes
Sunday Nov. 2, 3 PM:  Thomas Otten performing Part II of Adams Etudes

All events will be held in Hill Hall Auditorium.  There will be admission charge for the Adams events; other events are free.  Hope you can join us for this exciting week!

Accompanist Opportunity
My name is William Foos and I'm the music coordinator for Company Carolina, an extracurricular theatre group on campus. Company Carolina is producing the musical Little Shop of Horrors this year. The show is scheduled to be performed October 24th through October 26th. I was wondering if you could forward this email to any pianists that you think might be interested in accompanying in the show's pit orchestra. The accompanist would be expected to accompany show rehearsals in addition to separate pit rehearsal from September to October. Company Carolina would be willing to work with any scheduling difficulties. As Company Carolina does not have the resources to pay for accompaniment, the work would be pro bono. However, it would provide a great opportunity to gain experience. Please encourage any interested accompanists to contact me at foos@live.unc.edu or Company Carolina at companycarolinainfo@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
William Foos
