HOUSING RESOURCES COMING TO COMMUNITY

Are you a landlord or tenant?  Homeowner or property manager?  Interested in renting or buying property in Garfield Park?  Whatever your role, the GPCC has resources available to help you navigate housing issues and opportunities.

  • Through the Micro-Market Recovery Program (MMRP), GPCC staff has a list of vacant properties assessed and that may be available for purchase.

  • Do you have an upcoming  Housing Court date? GPCC staff is here to help. Click here for Housing Court dates and other resources.

  • Are you a landlord in need of property management training?  Interested in becoming a property manager?  CIC is beginning classes November 3-6.  You can also find a Community Receivership Manual with other information by clicking here.

  • Need financial assistance for repairs to your property?  City assistance is available, both in the form of loans for large scale repairs and assistance with porch and roof repairs.  Contact the GPCC's Housing Organizer at gphousingorganizer@gmail.com. for more information.

Join your neighbors at the last Neighborhood Markets of the season!

There's still time to shop local at the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market! There are TWO Markets left this season: Sept.13 and Oct. 11 from 10 - 1 p.m. at Lake and Kedzie.  We'll be having food demonstrations, local vendors and entertainment, and of course lots of fresh produce grown right in Garfield Park!

Want to learn how to become a community gardener and contribute to the Market next year? The GPCC will be sponsoring gardening training during the winter months so stay tuned to our website for more details early in 2015.

We're looking for leaders!

The GPCC is looking for residents interested in participating in a leadership development series of trainings starting this November, all designed to help community members become more active in advocating for community change in all areas - housing, business, crime, education. Trainings are open to anyone who lives and works in the community and is committed to partnering with others to make a change. Interested? Please contact GPCC Executive Director Mike Tomas at miket@gpccouncil.org or 773-638-1766 for more details.

More recognition for several of our community leaders this summer.  GPCC board member Angela Taylor and local business owner Christy Webber were highlighted in an ABC7 report last month about the gardens at Millennium Park - did you know many of the Park's flowers and vegetables got their start right here in the neighborhood?  Many of our local gardens also benefited from the GPCC's Summer Intern Program.  Eleven local teens worked for seven weeks, totaling more than 2,600 hours spent learning new skills, earning money and gaining valuable job experience.  Many thanks to the interns and Angela Taylor for a successful summer!

And another GPCC board member was recently highlighted in a LISC Chicago article about the City's Large Lots program, which has been very well received in Garfield Park.  Read about local resident Marie Cole and her role in the program, which will transform hundreds of vacant and blighted lots in the neighborhood.

Interested in joining the Garden Network as a new gardener or volunteer?  Contact Angela Taylor at taylor3433@yahoo.com for more information.

Business owner or would like to become one?

The GPCC's Commercial District Manager can assist you with starting or growing a local business, including access to financing and marketing resources.  We also have information on available spaces for rent and the opportunity to connect with other local business owners such as Mr. Joseph Henderson, owner of Faith in God Barbershop (pictured above) at 3159 W. Jackson.  Contact Fariddudin Muhammad, Commercial District Manager at 773-638-1766, x29 for details.

Affordable Care Act enrollment still available through State of Illinois

There are still opportunities to enroll your family for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act.  Go to http://www.getcoveredillinois.gov  or call 866-311-1119 for more information.  And many thanks to former Healthcare Organizer Tracelli Rockford who worked with the GPCC during the ACA's intitial signup period.  Thanks to Tracelli, hundreds of local residents were educated and enrolled in healthcare during 2014.
