Mentor.
Welcome to the fifth issue of Step Into Our Shoes, a newsletter focused on the people, programs and activities of BPW/St. Petersburg-Pinellas! Click here to read past issues
One of my first jobs after college involved selling Steinway & Sons pianos. I was a kid in a candy store, except my confections were studio uprights, baby grands, and concert grands fit for the world's finest performance halls. After a few months, I learned quickly that tickling the ivories did not translate directly into selling expensive luxury pianos.
Sensing my frustration, my boss took me to lunch to share this thought, "When negotiating, the first person who speaks (or plays!) loses." I closed my first deal the next day. 16 years later and I'm still discovering ways how to apply his words of wisdom to my career in public relations, my volunteerism and my personal relationships.
If you've been on the receiving end of good advice or have dished it out, take a moment to read the cover story, "Mentoring - What It's All About," of the Fall 2014 issue of Florida Business Woman Magazine. Then, sign up to attend our annual Working Women's Forum on Oct. 23, "From Grasshopper to Queen Bee: Mentoring Relationships That Buzz."
Whether you're a visionary boss, a motivational peer or an inspiring advisor, mentoring come in many forms. Maybe it's time to formalize your role as a mentee, or better yet, a mentor? You never know whose life you'll impact for years to come.
In solidarity,
Alizza Punzalan-Randle
