Haiti Service/Learning Trips
The UUCSJ (UU College of Social Justice) in cooperation with the UUSC (UU Service Committee) leads service trips to Haiti several times a year. A number of people from our congregation are interested in participating in a trip in 2015. By looking at the website (link below), you can see the variety of dates available. We are focusing on two trips early in the year. We have the opportunity to join a group from Columbia, Md. congregation January 17-24, 2015. We are very excited about this opportunity and are in the process of getting in touch with the Columbia contact person. Since their congregation initiated the trip, we know that some openings are available but we do not know how many. The other trip we are looking at is February 7-14, 2015.
Application deadlines for the Jan. & Feb. trips are:
Jan. trip: Online Registration deadline: Oct. 5, 2014 with deposit of $750. due 2 weeks later. Final payment due: Dec. 17
Feb. trip: Online Registration deadline: Dec. 7, 2014 with deposit of $750. due 2 weeks later. Final payment due: Jan. 7
The total cost of the trip is $1,500 plus airfare. Financial assistance is available (up to 50% of the total cost). You may contact Shelly Koo directly at skoo.@uucsj.org for more information on that.
For more information about the program and results of the work being done by UUCSJ & partner organizations in Haiti, please go to this link: http://uucsj.org/journeys/haiti/.
Good work is being done! UUCSJ has already completed 6 eco villages in Haiti. Each village houses 10 families, so a total of 60 families have been assisted by the efforts of people like us who want to work and learn in Haiti.
Since we are fast approaching deadlines, we would like to have responses re: your commitment for either trip by Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014. Please e-mail Roberta at msvee505@gmail.com and/or Marianne at mariannefr@aol.com with your commitment and any questions.

Orioles Vouchers
THANK YOU to everyone who purchased Orioles Vouchers this summer. We hope you enjoyed your visits to Camden Yards! If you still have vouchers, they are good through Thursday, September 4th. We sold a total of 80 vouchers which means the Orioles will donate $400 to our congregation. Next summer we hope to at least double that amount with partner outings.
Thanks again for your support. GO O's!

Our Change for Change Partner for September
Our Change for Change partner during September & October is Gather Baltimore, an innovative program that collects unsold vegetables, fruit and bread from the Baltimore Farmers Market and other sources for redistribution to local meal programs, faith communities and others in need. Gather Baltimore insures this food does not become waste and is made available to financially challenged families in communities where fresh healthy food is not readily accessible.
More information is available at the Social Action Clearinghouse table during Coffee Hour. |
