Haiti Service/Learning Trips

The UUCSJ (UU College of Social Justice) in cooperation with the UUSC (UU Service Committee) leads service trips to Haiti several times a year.  A number of people from our congregation are interested in participating in a trip in 2015.   By looking at the website (link below), you can see the variety of dates available.  We are focusing on two trips early in the year.  We have the opportunity to join a group from Columbia, Md. congregation January 17-24, 2015We are very excited about this opportunity and are in the process of getting in touch with the Columbia contact person. Since their congregation initiated the trip, we know that some openings are available but we do not know how many.  The other trip we are looking at is February 7-14, 2015.

Application deadlines for the Jan. & Feb. trips are:

Jan. trip: Online Registration deadline: Oct. 5, 2014 with deposit of $750. due 2 weeks later. Final payment due: Dec. 17

Feb. trip: Online Registration deadline: Dec. 7, 2014 with deposit of $750. due 2 weeks later. Final payment due: Jan. 7

The total cost of the trip is $1,500 plus airfare. Financial assistance is available (up to 50% of the total cost). You may contact Shelly Koo directly at skoo.@uucsj.org for more information on that.

For more information about the program and results of the work being done by UUCSJ & partner organizations in Haiti, please go to this link: http://uucsj.org/journeys/haiti/.

Good work is being done! UUCSJ has already completed 6 eco villages in Haiti. Each village houses 10 families, so a total of 60 families have been assisted by the efforts of people like us who want to work and learn in Haiti.
Since we are fast approaching deadlines, we would like to have responses re: your commitment for either trip by Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014.  Please e-mail Roberta at msvee505@gmail.com and/or Marianne at mariannefr@aol.com with your commitment and any questions.

Unitarian Universalists Needed!

Know any? Our Children's Religious Education program is looking for group facilitators and teaching assistants for all ages. Whether you like to hold babies, help preschoolers cut construction paper, listen and share big ideas with eight-year-olds, or hang out with teens and bask in their wisdom, we have a spot for YOU on a volunteer team! The work is simple, easy, and incredibly important.

Contact Becky Brooks, Director of Lifespan Religious Education, to see how your skills and interests might best fit with our programming (redirector@firstunitarian.net).

Sanctuary Clean Up Day is Saturday!!!!

The new church year starts on Sunday.  Let us gather to spruce up the sanctuary and prepare it for the new church year.   Cleaning our scared space will renew our spirits.  A clean sanctuary will be more comfortable for our guests and ourselves.  You will also get a sneak peek at the carpet-less chancel. Come and join us.

Clean up will take place on Saturday, September 6 between the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.  Come for an hour or for the whole time.  Wear old clothes. Water and snacks will be provided.  For more info, check in with Judy Mayer.

Back to School Collection

It's that time of year again.  We have received a list of needed supplies for the 4th Graders at William Paca Elementary School.  Please consider picking up some of the items as you and your family prepare for the new school year.  And remember, some items can be purchased as you do your regular grocery shopping (tissues and hand sanitizer).  The list will be available on August 17, 2014.  New this year: sweaters and sweatshirts.  Last day for collection will be Sunday, September 21, 2014.  Contact Roberta Van Meter, msvee505@gmail.com.

Orioles Vouchers

THANK YOU to everyone who purchased Orioles Vouchers this summer.  We hope you enjoyed your visits to Camden Yards!  If you still have vouchers, they are good through Thursday, September 4th. We sold a total of 80 vouchers which means the Orioles will donate $400 to our congregation.  Next summer we hope to at least double that amount with partner outings.

Thanks again for your support.  GO O's!

Our Change for Change Partner for September

Our Change for Change partner during September & October is Gather Baltimore, an innovative program that collects unsold vegetables, fruit and bread from the Baltimore Farmers Market and other sources for redistribution to local meal programs, faith communities and others in need.  Gather Baltimore insures this food does not become waste and is made available to financially challenged families in communities where fresh healthy food is not readily accessible.

More information is available at the Social Action Clearinghouse table during Coffee Hour.

Beginnings Class

Bridget Docherty recently graduated with a degree in psychology and is looking for a job. She's been been looking mostly in Maryland, Houston/Austin, and Northern CA (trying to stay close to family), but location isn't the main priority. Ideally she would like to get into a human resources, consulting, or recruiting position. (She likes helping people.) Ultimately she would like to go to grad school for social work or industrial psychology.

Downtown Neighborhood Circle

Join us for an evening of good food, fun and First Unitarian fellowship. Linda Ward is hosting in Apt 803 of Charles Towers at Charles & Saratoga Streets. We'll order food from HomeSlyce, which has outstanding pizza, sandwiches & salads.

All First Unitarian members and friends living in or near downtown are welcome!
Church Member Would Like to go Camping

I would like to go tent camping. If you have room for one more camper I can bring my sleeping bag and food and enjoy the great outdoors with you.
