News

Charities with income under £200k to be exempt from water charges
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement this week following a public consultation, signalling the end to the current complicated system which only allows charities earning under £75k annually to apply for exemption.
The government has stepped in with a package of concessions to help most small charities and amateur sports groups with measures which include a 50% discount for charities earning between £200,000-£300,000 and a two year graduated transition for charities not eligible for exemption.  Nicola Sturgeon said the new scheme will start from April 2015 with £2m government cash, shored up with £4.5m from Scottish Water.   More info...

500 Children's Panel Members Needed
An appeal has been issued for more people to become Children’s Panel members. Up to 500 new panel members are required to help make vital decisions about children’s futures throughout Scotland, including in Glasgow.   Read more...

Article 10 Project Launched
The Human Rights Consortium Scotland (HRCS) has launched its Article 10 Project so that human rights are widely recognised as a set of values and standards that unite us all, that help deliver better public services and are there when we need them.  The project is named after Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).  The project seeks to encourage people to consider how human rights can be helpful to their own and their families' lives. The HRCS website provides a range of 'wee briefings' on specific topics such as welfare, the economy, immigration and general resources on human rights and article 10. Read more...

Welfare Reform Putting Children at Risk
Research carried out by Barnardo’s Scotland and NSPCC Scotland into 14 Intensive Family Support Services across Scotland, discovered that services were struggling to cope with increased demand.  Pre-existing problems such as mental health problems, substance misuse and relationship breakdowns are being exacerbated by the impact of the reforms as the most vulnerable families struggle to cope financially.  Read more...

Play on Pedals in Glasgow
Play on Pedals, a collaborative project between CTC, the national cycling charity, Play Scotland, Glasgow Bike Station and Cycling Scotland is funded by People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund until January 2016.   Working with local ‘hero organisations’ Play on Pedals will ensure all 7,500 four year olds in Glasgow have the chance to learn to ride a bike before they start school.  Find out more...

The Data Practice Framework sets out the how information should be shared between partners to support the transitions young people make through learning. These are just some of the latest updates on funding that may be of interest to organisations working with children and families.

Big Lottery Communities & Families Funding
For projects supporting children 0-8 and their families. Communities & Families grants between £250 - £10,000 to be spent within 12 months.  More info...

Big Lottery Young Start GrantsFunding
For projects supporting young people 8 -24: Young Start grants between £10,000 and £50,000 for up to two years.  More info

Awards for All Scotland re-opens
The programme will also now be operated as a partnership by sportscotland and Big Lottery Fund. New application form, including the guidance, can be downloaded from the Big Lottery website.  More info...
 
Jeans for Genes Grants
UK charity Jeans for Genes is now accepting applications through its 2015 Grants programme. Jeans for Genes raises funds for research into serious genetic disorders affecting thousands of children such as cystic fibrosis, haemophilia and sickle cell. The grants available range from £500 - £25,000 and applications need to be submitted by a UK-based support group or UK-registered charity working with children (18 or under) affected by genetic disorders.  The deadline for applications is 30th September 2014. Cash 4 Clubs: Funding Scheme For Sports Clubs
Re-opens 1st September 2014. Sports clubs registered with their sport's National Governing Body or local authority can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to improve facilities, purchase new equipment, gain coaching qualifications, and generally invest in their sustainability. The closing date for applications will be the 30th September 2014.  More info...

Hilton in the Community - Funding for Children and Young People
Registered Charities that work with young people can apply for grants ranging from a few hundred pounds up to £30,000 per year for up to 2 years for work on: children and young people with disabilities; children and young people who are sick in hospital; children and young people who are homeless; children and young people who are life limited (requiring palliative care). The next closing date for applications is the 14th October 2014.  More info...

Safer Communities Awards 2015
The Safer Communities Awards celebrates excellence and innovation in community safety. The categories for this year's awards are: Early Intervention and Education; Innovative Media Campaign; Strengthening Community Engagement and Resilience; Wider Partnership.  The closing date for applications is Thursday 23 October 2014.  More info...

Volant Charitable Trust
Registered charities can apply for grants of over £10,000 funding to alleviate effects of poverty on women & children.
The deadline for applications is 9th January 2015.   For projects based in Scotland only, with funding requests of up to and including £10,000 per annum, applications are dealt with by Foundation Scotland. More info...

The Teddy Bear Foundation
The Teddy Bear Foundation provides small grants to schools and organisations who work to improve the lives of children with special needs in Scotland. There are no complicated forms to fill in and you can apply any time. Just tell them why you would like the money, what it’s for and email your request to info@theteddybearfoundation.org.
