Introducing SipSnapp
A New App for Better Navigating Beer Menus

September 2nd, 2014 Edition

It’s been a while since we last touched on a new RateBeer-related tool. I first heard about SipSnapp via Joe T., and it was really a catchy concept: snap a picture of a beer menu, and SipSnapp pulls up all of the reviews.

Also: It’s free.

SIPSNAPP Logo

The official launch of SipSnapp for iPhone was just over a week ago. (An Android release is expected later this year.) The app’s still a bit early in its development, but future updates will offer the ability to sync with your RateBeer account, enter reviews, and get personal recommendations.

We tested SipSnapp a bit over the weekend, then Ali and I headed over to TAPS yesterday for a more robust test run. The app currently suggests no greater than 16 lines of menu text at once, which was consistent with our experience. While TAPS’ 40-handle list proved precarious at first, we were soon (tempering our ambitions) hitting 80%–90% correct returns.

SIPSNAPP Preview

In touching base with Dan Ho from the SipSnapp team late last week, he emphasized that the product is still in a beta-like launch, with a bit more intuitive user interface and additional features coming soon. SipSnapp is happy to take any feedback from early users through its Contact Page.

Beer menus aren't getting any easier to negotiate. I do this for a living, and I haven't a damn clue what I'm ordering half the time. (Only part of that is an indefatigable sense of adventure.) Looking forward to seeing how this one develops going forward. Hope it helps you explore better.

We've been following Almanac since they were putting out like two beers a year. That latest IPA release was solid—and their plethora of small-bottle sours has been earning much love.
