September 2014

Fall Education Begins This Sunday

The new Sunday school year gets under way this Sunday, September 7, during the 10 o'clock Education Hour. Children three years through fourth grade meet on the second floor of the Jones Balcony, fifth graders meet in the Jones Basement, and the Toddler Nursery Class meets in the Jones 102 nursery room. Register children on Sunday or online. You can also download a schedule of Sunday School lessons (PDF) for the year. If you have questions about our programs, please don’t hesitate to contact Lisa Puccio.

Three-Year-Olds Are Movin’ on Up!

If you have a three-year-old, it’s time to move up to the second-floor Sunday School class. The three-year-old class teachers will be waiting to help you and your child get settled.

Our Nursery Staff is Growing

We have a wonderful nursery staff, and the group is growing as we prepare to offer additional nursery hours.

Our Sunday morning staff, Cassie Morris (supervisor), Alma Triumphante, Yolanda Suarez, and Maria Castro now includes Gloria Childress and Kayla Green on many Sundays. On Wednesday evenings, Gloria and Kayla will also be working with the infants through four-year-olds while Michelle Rosas and Diana Gutierrez will oversee children age five through 10 in the Jones Basement. During adult programs on Sunday evenings, Michelle Rosas and Vesta Bortey-fio will be our nursery staff leaders.

The Cathedral is blessed by this dedicated group.

Faith At Home – The Feast of St. Michael and All Angels

Monday, September 29, is Michaelmas, the feast day of St. Michael and all angels. Since the sixth century, this “Festival of Courage” celebrates St Michael’s conquering of the dragon and the victory of good over evil. This date, falling close to the autumnal equinox, also marks the beginning of fall. Saint Michael is recognized as an archangel in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic teachings. You can learn much more here.

Dear God, whose angels watch over us here on the earth, fill us with courage to serve you and be an example of your love. Help us to recognize your grace when we meet it. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Extend the Invitation

September 21 is Invitation Sunday. As Michael Harvey, the founder of Invitation Sunday explains, “Invitation connects with God’s activity. When we invite someone to church we go into God’s territory.” Harvey suggests that we shouldn’t worry about whether someone says yes or no; we should simply extend the invitation.
