September 8, Monday, 7:00 pm. WILLIAM MOYERS, son of TV journalist Bill Moyers, will speak in St. Catharine Hall at St. Catharine College on his best-seller book Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption. Free and open to the public.
September 11, Thursday, 5:30-8:30pm. NEW PIONEERS FALL MEMBER MEETING at HORSESHOE BEND WINERY in Willisburg. This is always a great gathering of old and new pioneers and a time to harvest the accomplishments of the past year and to look forward to the many ways we can work together to create a more sustainable local community in the year to come. Susan Spalding will help us reflect on the evolution of our organization, Horseshoe Bend will contribute its own special brand of hospitality to our gathering and each of us will join in making the POTLUCK MEAL. September 21, Sunday, CLIMATE CHANGE MARCH IN NYC. Local Kentuckians will be joining people from around the country and around the world in an historic march to raise awareness about the effects of climate change in anticipation of a United Nations Summit on this topic later in the week. Contact us at New Pioneers if you want to be there and we will put you in contact with sources of transportation and overnight accommodation.
October 7, Tuesday, 7pm, FALL FORUM ON CLIMATE CHANGE at the Springfield campus of Etown Community College. This Forum will include reflections and insights from participants in the NYC Climate Change event and will explore possible local responses to this vital issue.
October 11, Saturday, 8 am - 5 pm, Kentucky Country Day School, 4100 Springdale Rd., Louisville. Healthy Foods, Local Farms Conference: Real Homeland Security: Food, Health, and Community ( http://www.kcdtheater.org/event/healthy-foods-local-farms/). Always an excellent conference! Sister Claire has been invited to make introductory remarks. Wendell Berry will be among the many speakers.
RECENT HAPPENINGS:
New Pioneers participated in the African American Heritage Parade in July. A great time was had by all!
New Pioneers Board Member Amanda Manning shared the work and vision of NP with 54 4th graders at Washington County Elementary School and reported that the students had a delightful interest in the natural world around them. Thanks Amanda! These children are our hope for the future!
Sr. Claire McGowan and NP member Susan Classen CoL recently co-presented a workshop on the dangers of climate change and the necessity for renewable energy sources to over 850 leaders of Catholic Sisters’ communities gathered in Nashville for a meeting of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. The assembly unanimously passed a resolution committing those gathered to provide leadership for the transition to renewable energy as quickly as possible.
