THIS WEEK AT KING'S
September 8-14, 2014

I am literally writing this TWAK as I watch Zoolander for the first time. Favourite line so far: “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty.” Just thought I’d share that with ya.

But what a week amirite? We had a yurt, we had the exercise formerly known as Zumba, and we had whatever the heck this was. The only thing we were missing was someone to cash in on the incredible prize that I offered at the bottom of last week’s TWAK. (Do you hear that? It’s the sound of several hundred people (yeah that’s right ElecTWAK Avenue had a record number of emails opened (what is going on with these brackets though…)) rummaging through their inboxes to look it up.) Seriously, does no one know about the cuneiform tablet in the basement of the library?? It’s awesome! Soooo awesome that I’m going to give all of you frosh ONE MORE WEEK TO SEND ME SELFIE OF YOU WITH IT TO WIN MY OLD LAUNDRY CARDS WITH $$$ ON THEM. Get snappin.

Looking towards the future now, all I can say about this week is that if you have plans for Thursday evening, cancel them. Right now.

WEATHER with Emma

Emma says "Frosh! It's over!" and that she got followed home by a rat this week. Ew.
Emma Steen is a regular reader of the weekly weather who graciously puts together this detailed and emotional forecast. Look out for more in-depth and personal accounts of what it is like to be her in an upcoming TWAK.

MONDAY - 19 and sunny. Enjoy this while you can, plebes.

TUESDAY - Rain.

WEDNESDAY - Ew.

THUSRDAY - "23 degrees," don't buy this.

FRIDAY - Cloudy, because we're in Halifax. Please don't expect better.

SATURDAY - Who cares, it's Saturday. It will probably be fine.

SUNDAY - Literally, no way of knowing this. It's just not listed. Sorry y'all.

ANNOUNCEMENTS™

FIRST COUNCIL MEETING OF THE YEAR
Darn right it’s next week. Sunday September 14 at 10AM in the Boardroom, to be precise. Oh, you didn’t catch that? I said it’s on Sunday September 14 at 10AM in the Boardroom (on the second floor of the A&A). Council is the KSU’s governing body, so it’s where things like society ratifications and funding happen, certain committees are appointed, and generally all of the Union’s greatest moments go down. As King’s students and Union members you all have the right to attend these meetings and speak at them. I hear you saying "Ew, a 'meeting'. Sounds boring." Think again. These meeting are really interesting and they’re a great way to get involved and see what your Union is up to, with no commitment at all! Seriously, I went to every meeting in my first year and it was great. One more time, that’s Sunday September 14 at 10AM, in our lovely Boardroom. Do we look like something out of the cold war? Maybe. You’ll have to come to find out.

KING’S THEATRICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Come one, come all, to the KTS’s AGM! OMG! FTW! I can’t wait! Join your KTS executive as they discuss who's manning this vessel, where they’re headed, and how you can get on board. There will also be an *election alert* election *election alert* held to appoint a new member of the executive in the position of Pit Manager! If you feel you are right for the position or just want to have a say in how the society will operate, your presence is welcome and encouraged. This boogie is going down September 10th @ 8:00pm in The Pit. “The Pit?” you might ask. “Where the jeepers is that?” Just head into the A&A, down towards the Wardy, turn left, open a door, and proceed down the scary little hallway with a ceiling of exposed wires until you can't go any further. Then stop, turn around, walk back 6 paces the way you came, turn left, and you should find yourself with the Cochran laundry room on your right, and the beautiful Pit dead ahead! OR, better yet, find a friend and follow 'em down! “Snax” will be provided (will there be “snacks” too? Who knows).

CKDU 88.1FM OPEN HOUSE
CHRISTMAS IS HERE AGAIN. CKDU 88.1FM is Halifax’s only campus and community radio station. They’re on the 4th floor of the Dalhousie Student Union Building and they are open for your curious and eager-to-get-involved-because-they’re-awesome eyes to explore! This week’s open house is on Thursday September 11 from 12pm-5pm. They are free and will have snacks #freefood and coffee and I will be there too! Check them out on Facebook too.

KSU HEALTH PLAN OPT-OUT DEADLINE QUICKLY APPROACHING
The deadline to opt out of the KSU Health Plan is September 19!! Yes, that’s next next Friday, but this is important! It’s super easy to do, just head over to DalOnline, log in, and opt out! Not sure if you should opt out, or didn’t even know that you had a health plan? Take a look at our handy-dandy info page and read all about it.

TWAK SUBSCRIBER INFO, YES, AGAIN
This email should be addressed to you personally. If it’s not, or if I spelled your name wrong (I’m sorry), update your profile! If everyone does it, I can even address this email to you and it will have your very own name in the opening message. What a treat!

SCHEDULE DU JOUR

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 9

YOUNG ALEXANDRA SOCIETY FIRST MEETING
Manning Room, 11:30AM

The folks over at the Young Alexandra Society would love it if you came out to this, their first meeting of the year. There’s also going to be FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE OMG COUNT ME IN.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10

SODALES DEBATING SOCIETY FIRST MEETING
Dalhousie Student Union Building room 307, 6PM

At Sodales’s first meeting of the year there will be a show debate round featuring some of the club’s most experienced debaters, followed by light refreshments and an opportunity for new members to chat about the club and debate in general. This sounds awesome so far. The resolution that they will see is: this house regrets the state’s involvement in shaping cultural identity for its citizens (for example, PM Harper’s War of 1812 campaign). Hope to see everyone there!

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 11

EXTERNAL ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING
Manning Room, 4:30PM

Come get involved with KSU campaigns! The committee’s first meeting is here at last! The External Action Committee (formerly Action! King’s) organizes events, writes letters, makes posters, chants slogans, and eats snacks, all promoting campaigns supported by the Union. The very best part is that as an open committee; ANY and EVERY King’s student can join. It’s a great and simple way to get involved with the KSU. Questions? Hit up the Union’s External VP Katie Douglas.

FREE CHAPEL CONCERT WITH JEREMY RHIZOR AND HENDRICK VELTMEYER
Chapel, 7PM

This concert, presented by Youth Arts Connection, will take place in our lovely chapel for free! It’s part of the Chapel Concert Series, which I remember from last year and know is amazing, but surprisingly can’t find any details about online. Next week!

SUSTAINABILITY KING’S MEETING
Manning Room, 6:30PM

Sustainability King’s is so cool, I’m green with envy. This meeting might be the most fun you have all week. They’re going to talk about what they’re doing and where they’re going, and there “may” be snacks. Not only that, but there will “definitely” be SustKing’s swag. #reducereuserecyclereswag

DANCE COLLECTIVE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
King’s Aerobic Studio (under the gym), 8:30PM

Interested in dancing? Choreographing? Stepping up? Learning how to groove like Beyonce? Then why don’t ya come on out to the Dance Collective's AGM to discuss what you would like to see happen this year and help them make it happen! The meeting will only last about half an hour (unless someone starts a flash mob or something) and you’ll get a chance to meet the exec, the shadow exec (incoming newbies or the current exec’s evil twins… who’s to say), eat cookies, and join the dance party that is bound to happen. Come help them help you to shake that groove thang.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12

NACHOS IN THE QUAD
Quad, 7:30PM

Courtesy of the Christian Fellowship. How awesome is this event?? It’s literally just free nachos. What could possibly be better? I can’t think of anything. See you there.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP KICKOFF DINNER
Meet at A&A steps, 5:20PM

They’re at it again!! This time it’s homemade seafood chowder. They’re walking over to a nearby house for dinner. Enjoy!
