Working with Jennifer
By Linda Fuller
It has been a great learning experience working with Jennifer Hurley. She is a hard worker and she was devoted to leading the way in the TE (Transitional Employment) area of the San Antonio Clubhouse. During the past 6 months she was able to secure several positions of employment at some San Antonio businesses.
Learning how to approach a business establishment and having good rapport with the employer was a priority for Jennifer and also for myself. We worked with a few others in our area of the Clubhouse and we were good team players. Not only did we explain to an employer how the Clubhouse members would benefit, but also how the employer would benefit by hiring a Clubhouse member. We explained that the members were dedicated employees.
Jennifer’s character was impressive. She always had a smile on her face. She was very approachable and took care in answering my questions, and also questions from the employer. Jennifer will be missed by San Antonio Clubhouse members and staff. We wish her the best in her future endeavors and we hope she will come back to visit us in the future.
Thank you, Jennifer.
"Feeling Funny": A Perspective
By John Snead
In the following piece, Clubhouse member John Snead plays with the phrase "feeling funny." Enjoy!
I am struggling with my pen. I’ve gotten it to write. How can I express how I feel? The doctor just told me I’ve been a little too funny lately. Does a little too funny mean, “not funny, anymore” or what? He says that next time he sees me he’s gonna “increase my medicine.” Until then I’d better focus on being just a little less funny. Either that or a lot more funny. But I’m not sure. I thought about calling the doctor’s office and asking the nurse about that but maybe I’d really get into trouble. I mean, I just saw the doctor, and now I’m bothering the nurse? That isn’t even funny. I’m sorry. I tried to be funny. At least when I get my medicine I won’t be walking through walls trying to be funny. It will be a lot safer for everybody. Isn’t that funny how, when you’re getting to be really funny, you’re not that funny anymore? I’m just writing this down so I can ask the doctor about that next time.
Clubhouse Members Debut at Augie's Alamo City BBQ
By Nathan Tuttle

The hard work of the Transitional Employment (T.E.) Development Team continues to pay off for our Clubhouse members. Thanks to a connection the team made when making a presentation at
Boysville Thrift Store, the Clubhouse now has four members (Brandon, Jack, Ralph, and Maria) working in four Clubhouse T.E. positions at
Augie's Alamo City BBQ.
Augie's Alamo City BBQ is a brand new second location for Augie's owner Augie Cortez who also owns the successful
Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse Bar-B-Que on N. St. Mary's Street. The first day on the job for Clubhouse members was a 3PM-9PM shift on August 22nd with staff job coaches Kyler and Dennise. That evening, Augie hosted a pre-launch VIP party and Clubhouse members were quick to jump in and help.
"Augie told us to just take a seat so he could chat with us before we got started," says Kyler, "and before he was able to visit with us, our members were already up and helping get the place ready." And ever since, they've received nothing but rave reviews from Augie himself.
Two Clubhouse members handle food preparation and the other two are dishwashers. But according to Augie, all have the potential to become meat cutters. So stop on by, have some delicious barbeque, and say hello to our hardworking Clubhouse members!
