Love Our Lake Day Needs Volunteers!

Love Our Lake Day is next Sunday, September 14th. Our route promises to keep you moving and grooving to live performers, foursquare tournaments, tennis, bike rodeos and martial arts demos on car-free streets.  Picnic with one of 15 food trucks, or visit nearby restaurants.

At 2pm, Mayor Jean Quan, City Council members and other community advocates will come together at the Lake Merritt Amphitheater stage for a brief ceremony.

To pull this off, we have a total of 150 volunteer slots to fill. For a couple hours during the day of the event, you could be helping at the information booths, encouraging people to complete surveys, floating along the event route as a Route Rabbit, or helping direct foot, bike and car traffic.

Thanks to all who have already signed up. Now go grab your best friend to volunteer with you.  We have a beautiful volunteer T-shirt (plus a cool surprise swag) for each person who volunteers.

We thank all the support from the community and sponsors who are cheering Oaklavia on. We know this is a transformative event. If you would like to join the growing corps of supporters and to sponsor the event, contact Chris@wobo.org right away.

Keep checking our event website (oaklavia.org) and facebook page (@oaklavia) for the must current news.

When you join us on September 14, be sure to tell the world about Oaklavia, #oaklavia, #loveourlake.
Our business partner Lake Merritt Dental has been donating $5.00 to every patient who walks or bikes to their appointments! That is $70.00 right there for safer streets!

Volunteer
WOBO is a strong community organization that advocates for pedestrians and bicyclists such as yourself, and our accomplishments have only been possible because of our loyal members and volunteers.

I encourage you to become a member to further our cause.

Currently, 2.5% of Oakland residents bike and 4.2% walk to work (6.7% combined). And yet, we still rank #7 in the nation for biking, and #16 for walking out of 52 cities (2014 Benchmarking Report on Walking/Cycling).

Furthermore, Oakland is ranked #14 in pedestrian and bicycle fatality rates from 2009-2011. Meaning that 9.3 people were killed for every 6.2 miles walked and biked (2014 Benchmarking Report on Walking/Cycling).

WOBO strives to increase walking and biking mode shares to a combined 20% and reducing fatalities to ZERO by 2020.

In doing so, we fight for protected bike lanes, wider sidewalks, slower speed limits, and organizing open street events, such as Oaklavia, to promote safe, easy, accessible, and fun walking and biking.

We want you to continue making a positive impact in your community, just as much as we do.

Join here.

Best,
