DAYS IN THE LIFE OF DAVID WOLF
Nereid member David Wolf recently shared a few pages of his diary with the Nereid News:
Saturday, Aug 30: At Route 7 Bridge, full pressure, oar entrapped in submerged milk carton, overhead crab but somehow high and dry.
Sunday, Aug 31: At Market Street Bridge, full pressure, oar entrapped in branches of submerged tree, overhead crab...not so lucky.
Lessons learned:
- Swimming is excellent cross training.
- One can still have an outstanding rowing workout after a swim.
- The Passaic tastes a lot better in 2014 than in 2013.
- I now know why you can't find instructional videos on YouTube about reentering a reverse wing-riggered boat...because it's impossible.
WORDS FROM NEW MEMBERS
Welcome to new members:
David Billig did sweep rowing in Tufts University in Boston and is now enjoying sculling lessons with Kyle Dowd. He hopes to get involved with both recreational rowing and the masters programs.
Filipe Martinez is new to rowing but he says:
I am so proud to be a new member of the Nereid Club this year. Thanks to all my coaches: Allison, Rich, and “el campeon” Mauricio!
Maureen Koziol and
Linda Kao decided to learn to row at Nereid in May after seeing boats on the Passaic. As Maureen described it:
I had no warning of how much joy learning to row would bring into my life. It is hard to speak individually as my experience is so happily connected to also getting to know Linda better. In our post-row review sessions in the parking lot, we quickly realized how lucky we were to find the treasure of Nereid and land in the Learn to Row with such gifted young rowers as Anthony and Mary! Everyone at the club has been so welcoming. The first time I flipped, it seemed like I learned five people's names that day. After the orientation to the club, Lindsay gave us the confidence to go out alone in a double for the first time, one we will never forget! For her part, Linda, a Cranford resident, says:
It has been a wonderful summer and looking forward to improving my technique and meeting new people.
BOAT TLC
A few reminders:
- Coach Bob O'Connor has spent countless hours repairing and maintaining our fleet. He recommends that anyone rowing a club put it in slings before and after the row to make sure no parts or hardware are missing, all nuts are tight, slides are even, etc. These boat checks will cut down on boat repairs/maintenance. Any boat issues should be reported to Captain Sheila at sheila.oshea@comcast.net. If a boat is missing parts, do not take it out!
- Please remember that a few privately-owned singles are stored outside on the south side of the house. These are clearly marked and no one may ever row them without the express permission of the owner. If anyone is unsure about which singles are club boats and which are privately owned, please consult the fleet list on the outdoor bulletin board.
- Last, anyone who stores a boat inside the boathouse should be extremely careful when moving the boat off or on the rack. Several singles have been damaged by the riggers of nearby boats.

SOUTHBOUND BAN REMAINS
Please note that the ban on rowing south of the Route 3 Bridge is still in place as we have not been able to install hazard markers around the River Mile 10.9 site yet. The board is working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience and cooperation.
BRICK CAMPAIGN
It’s your last chance to support Nereid, beautify the club grounds, and set your love of rowing in stone (well, in brick)! Nereid’s ongoing brick campaign will come to a close in a few weeks. These bricks will be used for a walkway at the entrance of the club. We are still looking for 100 percent participation from all Nereid members and juniors—so if you didn’t yet buy a brick, please do so! Bricks come in three sizes, ranging from $100-$500, with prices slightly higher with a graphic included. We have many great graphics along with logos for Nereid, Montclair High School, and Head of the Passaic Regatta. We can also upload other images if you want to use your own. Click
