JMA 1 quota owners

Over the last fishing season Trident Systems has been tasked with the job of catch sampling on behalf of quota owners. On Thursday 18 September, David Middleton will to report back on the sampling results and is willing to share his view on the health of the stock. We’ll hold this meeting in Tauranga so that samplers at Pelcoe and Sanford sheds (who have done all the work) can take part in it.

All quota owners are welcome – if you want to skype, we’ll make facilities available. This will be an important meeting to discuss the future of the stock and options for management.

ICP iwi are encouraging their whanau members to look seaward and apply for one of their three industry scholarships they run with Sanford. Two fishing scholarships and one summer work programme at either Sanford or an ICP iwi fishing company is on offer. These are fantastic opportunities to launch a career in seafood.

All scholarships provide experience and training in different parts of the fishing industry. Two places are available to ‘Step Up and Go Fishing’ with a chance to try your hand at commercial fishing before taking up a paid study and training programme and guaranteed job with Sanford.

The ‘Work over Summer’ scholarship offers a single place with a shore based skill set aimed at fishing, aquaculture, vessel engineering or a factory focus – but nothing is too hard for us. If you want career experience in another area of our companies, we’ll try and deliver.

There is no time to dilly dally – applications close 31 October 2014.  Find more information here.

FINZ will hold its AGM on Thursday 25 September from 1-4pm.

This will take place at Seafood Industry House, 74 Cambridge Terrace in Wellington. Papers for the meeting, including a draft business plan for 2014/15, will be circulated to all members next week.

Keeping it in the whanau, Stan Pardoe took his grand niece Micheala to the Seafood New Zealand conference with a mission for her to network with industry leaders.

Micheala is in her final year at Waikato University studying fisheries science. Stan said he was bringing her to capital because who knows what might come of it – we reckon he didn’t realise they be a pin up picture in our newsletter.
