Whatever your week has been like it's up from here. Whether you bent your phone or did an up-late update - forget about it, step out of the blue light and let it vibrate on silent. Hit the garage or catch up with your varsity bros. Butter up, dress up and take a break from working on your novel - it's time to listen out and gear down into slo-mo.

Andras Fox is a big part of the whole genre I'm calling Leisure Pop. Vibrate On Silent is Andras' sixth release in under three years (which is just crazy) and you can't help but imagine yourself knee-deep in summer sun and fern fronds when listening to it. Maybe the lapping water and chirping bird samples could have something to do with it. This record, like his previous ones, has a definitive throwback vibe. There are clear minimal house sensibilities driving this thing but there are other influences too – bits of euro disco, 80s pop, latin rhythms. It's what you've most likely come to expect from him.

Suicides, underage relationships, adultery, making do. Sheesh! There are some pretty heavy themes in Skeleton Twins, but like any family worth its salt, there's a sense of brevity, some laughing gas and a love of karaoke too. In upstate New York, Maggie (Kristen Wiig) pours out enough pills in her palm to do some serious damage. Before she gets the chance to down them, the phone rings and she's pulled back into her own messy, safe life; her twin brother Milo (Bill Hader) has beat her to the punch in his California bathtub. In a sad symbiosis with the rest of his ambitions, his attempt to take his own life doesn't quite land and he wakes up in hospital, begrudgingly bandaged and alive. Estranged for ten years, Maggie has no real choice but to schlep Milo and his pet fish back to their East Coast hometown to recover.

Cory Arcangel is an artist best known for his video work of cats on pianos but his latest book has The Times, Paris Review and others lining up to analyse whether it's a statement on the demise of the novel — a very 2014 take on cultural appropriation, or simply whether it means James Yeh “In the span of four hours at the coffee shop working on [his] novel managed to change the word 'aloof' to 'stuck up'”.

You've probably got no chance of courting Ms Mendes these days. You know what sealed the deal for Gosling? The motorbike, a two-wheeled fuel sipping machine which each individual considers including in their life. Prior to purchase you’ve got to ask yourself - am I badass enough? If you aren’t sure whether the speed demon life will mean goodbye to your Saturday morning bagel and coffee routine, then scoot down to Spadille Café & Garage - a halfway hangout of sorts that drips motor oil, foosball and cream cheese.

Just like Summer and Seth, madness and art go a long way back, be it Adolf Wolfli rewriting his world from scratch, or Joe Meek beating the Ruskies and the Yanks to space. Dance, threaded with contortions, instability and a constant struggle to stay balanced (grow up with a clumsy sister learning ballet and you’ll know what I mean), perhaps sums up the tension best; after all, when Ophelia died, she waltzed herself right off the edge of sanity before coming to rest in the lilypads.
In this spirit BORDERLINE is a fierce, vivid exploration of what it is to not only dangle but pirouette on the edge. Choreographed by the hell-acclaimed Aimee Smith, you'd be wrong in anticipating the kind of glacial, watch-a-swan-blossom-into-a-fish delicacy that comes with some dance performances.

Bleddyn Butcher has been photographing Nick Cave for three decades. And there's no downplaying the cumulative effect of those years of portraiture: flip these pages and watch Nick go from a snotty youth fronting the Birthday Party, to a screenwriter and solo artist, to the moustached head of Grinderman. We see him with Nina Simone, the Pogues' Shane McGowan and the Fall's Mark E Smith. We even see him meet Bob Dylan – cocooned in a hoodie – without realising it's him.

Dress Up's SS14/15 collection, Self Titled pairs soft dreamy linens and structured denim - reflecting the duality and balance of the softness and power within femininity. Those three weeks of rain in Perth were pretty grim; thank the lord WA brims more sunshine than a Maria Minerva beach set. We're pretty sure Spring has settled in, I mean those hayfever ads are on the telly? Perth's most iconic street label Butter Goods felt the summer rays first and are folding and shelvin' fresh cut threads for those brow-sweat, icy pole da-y-ze.

There is a lot to be thankful for this weekend. You’ve got to love an extra day and you’ve got to love that Listen Out is in town. Even if it does rain and your ravin’ singlet gets soaked – don’t worry, because the after party is going to be ace.
Parker are hosting the only official after-party with Thousands fave act Shlomho at the helm. If you remember Shlo’s set at Laneway Festival a few years back then you know that Parker will be providing vibin’ times all night long.

Paired Ginger X Smart
by Claire Finneran
It's getting pretty bright out there, friends! The sun is just starting to have that dazzling edge, which means excessive squinting or a big ass pair of sunnies. Pared eyewear's latest range, a collaboration with Ginger & Smart, is just in time to protect your little eyeballs from the harsh rays of summer.
Carrying themes of 'perfect pairings', the two labels bring together a range of vibrant unisex frames. The duality concept is even there in Pared's style names, like, 'Bread and Butter' or 'Pools and Palms', and combines the materials and colours of Ginger & Smart's latest collection with acetate, rose gold and leather. This collaboration is indeed an excellent combo, with the two aesthetics meshing in some seriously good-looking sunglasses, which can be worn by sartorial blokes AND sheilas. We have one pair of the appetising Cookies and Cream style glasses to giveaway. To enter, answer the following question:
This Week's Question |
Complete this perfect pair: pen and…
a) Pasta
b) Paper
c) Panda
d) Prius
Send your name and address to perth.win@thethousands.com.au with 'Cookies and Cream' in the subject, and your answer and postal address in the body.
