Art in Transit

Maryland Transit Administration's Purple Line Seeks Artists for Enhancement Projects

The Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) General Engineering Consultant Team (GEC) seeks artists to create enhancements for the future Purple Line light rail project. The Purple Line, expected to be operational in 2020, will connect Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland.

Artists are being asked to submit applications by Friday, November 14, 2014, to be considered for future opportunities along the Purple Line. This Call for Artists is open to all professional artists, preferably with public art experience.

Approximately 21 locations have been identified as Art-In-Transit opportunities, including fences, railings, ground planes, feature walls, retaining walls, bridges, tunnel portals, way-finding pylons, and station canopies and windscreens.

The second phase of artist selection is expected to begin in 2015, with a competitive interview or proposal process for each opportunity. Artists who are invited to submit proposals will be offered a stipend commensurate with the scope of the project and the proposal requirements.

Artists will be asked to work with the communities along the corridor to create artwork that highlights the cultural vitality of the region, and reflects the artistic, cultural and/or historical interests of the surrounding communities.
