Let RCR Find Your Next Boat, or Sell Your Existing One!
What's New? By Don Finkle: This is my favorite time of year for sailing. The weather is usually cooperative with plenty of breeze, few bugs, and clear skies. The only issue, and not a small one, is the early sunset which puts the kibosh on weeknight racing. When you all get around to voting for me as Emperor my first official act will be adding another hour of Daylight Saving Time on September 1. Vote early and often!
We had a good summer. There were enough events to keep us as busy as we could handle. The J88 we sailed is so much darn fun, I am really loving this boat! Jim Egloff has actually sailed the 88 even more than I have and is a good resource for anyone who wants to know more, or better yet, go sailing. Tim Finkle campaigned the J70 and he is anxious to share what he has learned with any of you, and he is more than willing to take you for a ride on his 70 too.
2014 J/88
C&C 30s have been selling and there are a number of buyers who are very close. The interest has been from all parts of the globe, including Japan and Europe. There is the making of an international class here. The boat was a hit at the Newport show and you can see it for yourself in Annapolis.
Lake George Report, from Youngstown YC Fleet Captain, Chris Doyle: The Lake George J/22 Regatta was last weekend. There were 26 boats including three teams from the YYC. Hays/Carminati/Finkle were 7th, Doyle/Snyder/Snyder were 3rd. Doyle/Burns/Schwabe were first. The food was great, the sailing was uncharacteristically very good, Colleen Johnson sung “Mustang Sally” with the band, and a good time was had by all. Adam Burns was the best I’ve ever seen on tactics and strategy, and I have been around.
(See the Stories section below for Tim Finkle’s report on the regatta)
J/24 Worlds, Newport RI, Sept 20-26: More locals representing us well, including Mike Ingham, Rossi Milev, Travis Odenbach, Lambert Lai, Edmund Rees, Ted Bartlewski, Blair Dinsdale, Tom Doran, Aiden Glackin and I’m sure a few others. A lot going on in Toronto:
J/105 North American Championship, RCYC, Sep 24-28: 27 boats, most of them from Toronto will line up for the NAs this weekend. We had a boat “Sanity” come through Youngstown by trailer from San Diego that we stepped and launched before heading over to RCYC. This was a beautifully kept J105 that looked much newer than the 1996 model that it is.

Looking for a boat to buy? Let us find it for you. Check out our list below, those shown in this newsletter are only the performance boats we have for sale in-house, there are many other boats available too. Please keep in mind that the list contains only our own Central listings, those that are listed directly for sale at RCR. We of course share these listings with all other brokers, same as the MLS works in real estate.
At the same time it is always a struggle to make the point that we can sell any boat that is out there for sale through any other brokerage, we are not limited to our own Centrals. Just as we work with other brokers to sell our own listings, we work with out of town brokers to find boats for our local customers. So please let us know what you are looking for and we will find it and negotiate on your behalf. No cost to you for this arrangement.

News, Stories and Articles:
Lake George Club Open J/22 Regatta, by Tim Finkle: This was the first time I’d been to this regatta and as it turned out, that was a huge mistake not getting there sooner! When we had RCR’s demo J/22s in the early 2000’s, we always planned on going but it conflicted with school, hockey games or some other poor excuse and we never got there. I’d heard that it was a great club, great food, great party, but usually not great sailing. The lake is very small and surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains, so you can get some pretty squirrely conditions and “shifty” is putting it lightly. But I can only go from what I experienced this past weekend and that was great breeze both days and yes, it was shifty, but not outrageous. The southern breeze came in waves and you could see definite breeze lines on the water and you’d get solid 10-15 degree shifts, so the best teams were those that could manage the shifts and pick off puffs on their way to the front. I thought the sailing was great with 26 mostly very competitive boats on the line and 7 races over the 2 days. I was sailing with Justin Hays (Helm) and Jimmy Carminati (Bow) on the Carminati family owned boat and we had a great time. We were off the pace from the lead group on Saturday and slightly better on Sunday mixing it up with the leaders at times, but still not a contender, finishing 7
th overall. The team of Chris Doyle, Adam Burns and Christian Schwabe from Youngstown put on a clinic and didn’t even need to sail the last race on Sunday (and won the race to the hoist by a mile). They were higher, faster, and smarter than the rest of the field, as the results show. When I asked Chris Doyle why they were so good, he quickly pointed out that Adam Burns was on his game, like when a goalie says “he’s seeing the puck well”. In this case, Adam was “seeing the breeze well”. Not a huge surprise given the success he’s had over his sailing career. Chris is no doubt also being his usual modest self and from my point of view (behind them) you could see they had boat speed on the rest of us, something Chris has worked very hard on over the years.
Lake George Regatta held in J/22’s
Sailing aside, it is just a cool place to go. There is a 102 year old club that has all kinds of character and the hospitality is great. They fed us 3 full buffet style meals a day. Yes, that includes lunch, which we come in off the water for after 2 races on Saturday. Part of that is so you can go to the bathroom (not allowed in the lake) but also because it is so conveniently close to where we were racing. We went back out for the afternoon and got in two more and then finished the evening with a formal attired dinner at the club that was again, delicious.
Here is a note from Hank Evans, family friend and former YYC Commodore when he found out I was racing at the Lake George Club. Hank grew up on Lake George and was the Head Sailing Instructor during his college summers:
“Hi Tim,
I knew you would like Lake George and the club. Many feel that Lake George and Lake Tahoe are the two most beautiful in the country.
Lake George was very much like Newport back in the Golden Age with the very wealthy from New York and Philadelphia building their summer "cottages" there. When I was growing up the lake was still lined with these mansions from Lake George Village to Bolton Landing on both sides of the lake. The Lake George Club was where they congregated to socialize and sailboat race. The docks were lined with Hackers, Gar Woods and Chris Crafts as the members usually came to the club by boat. They raced 18' Cape Cod Knockabouts, Star boats and Sound Inter Clubs. All wood of course. My grandfather's Star was #381, our neighbors was #138 and I raced #1330.
Member George Reis had the powerboat El Lagarto which he raced under the LGC flag. It is the only boat to win the Gold Cup three times. Lake George held the Gold Cup twice with LGC as the host club.
Suffice it to say the club has quite a history and its founding members read like the social and business register of New York City. I was very fortunate to grow up there.
Congrats to you and the other YYC sailors for a very good showing!
Cheers,
Hank”
Raising the Next Generation to be Lifetime Sailors, From Sailing Scuttlebutt 9.22.14: Jody Starck, 2013 U.S. Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, has deep roots in the Lightning class. To ensure the health of the class, and of the sport, Jody shares the work being done to get young people involved in sailing at Buffalo Canoe Club in Ridgeway, Ontario…
A Few people at our club figured out and have driven the point home that with so many of the junior boats, the adults can’t get in and sail against the kids. The boats are just too small. So we decided to bring the kids into the Lightning class with us. The boat is small enough to where they can be out on their own, but big enough to where we can be competing against them. And the target crew weight for the boat allows for a mix of genders and weights.
During the summer we have Tuesday night races, which are a big deal, and we encourage the kids to skipper their own boat. Now, with our club, we have three Lightning class world champions, so on the start line, these kids are pitted against the best sailors, who are determined not to lose to the kids. But when racing is over, the adults and kids meet up and chat about the races, and point out what the kids could have done better.
As a result of this inter-generational mingling, the learning curve for the kids is going up so fast. They are benefiting from our mistakes; we are able to mentor them – both on the race course and on land. We talk about everything: tuning and tactics, crew work and team chemistry. And now these kids are competing in Lightning events away from the club. Simply put, the class has proven to be a great platform for everyone to be playing together.
We recognize that by encouraging the kids to sail in the Lightning, we are not promoting some of the youth-centric classes in the USA. Instead of focusing on the Lightning, some of these kids might otherwise be training on, for example, the Club 420. We certainly are not discouraging the kids if they desire to go to the Club 420 Nationals, but they will have to forge that path more so on their own.
Years ago, when Larry MacDonald took his 10 year old daughter to the North Americans, we thought he was crazy. But Larry had the long view, knowing that the health of the class relied on its current members connecting with the youth sailors. By one of the top sailors in the class taking this position, it resonated with the rest of us.
Larry also figured that if we get the girls involved in the Lightning fleet, the boys will come. And they have, but what’s great is that we still probably have more young girls sailing than boys. But our motivation is to fill the boats with people. I might go racing with a boat full of kids. Who cares… no kid left behind. That’s the mentality.
What folds into this youth movement within the class is the Boat Grant Program. Its target candidate is the young person now coming out of college, who isn’t in the position to buy a boat. This program has succeeded in engaging them, making the connection, and giving them a sailing future
Another benefit of the class has been the boat’s durability and cost. We have to thank our builders for this. The boats are near indestructible, they are reasonably priced, and don’t greatly devalue. Older used boats that might not look too fast are still plenty competitive, and are priced within reach.
I was chatting with an old friend, who was a really good sailor in college, about buying a Lightning. His oldest kid was 10 years old, and I was telling him how he needed a Lightning. He was concerned about the cost, but for $10000 he can have a really good boat. He can have a boat to sail with his kids, and to race competitively at the highest level.
Thankfully, the class has kept a handle on changes. The boats are really similar in performance, so it is easy for people to take whatever vintage boat they have, and feel like a player. That’s what makes classes endure and remain strong. And by bringing the kids into the class, while they are still kids, we can help ensure that they remain strong too.
New Boat News:
The New Beneteau First ASA 22: Beneteau and ASA Launch Training Vessel
ANNAPOLIS, Md., September 16 2014 – Beneteau America and the American Sailing Association (ASA) are announcing the World Premiere of the ASA First 22 at the upcoming Annapolis Sailboat Show, October 9-13 2014. Beneteau America and the ASA initially announced their partnership at last year’s Annapolis boat show and are now eager to reveal the fruit of their collaboration, a new ASA-exclusive sail training vessel using Beneteau’s popular First 20 as its inspiration.
THE PERFECT TRAINING VESSEL: The new boat is being produced in the USA at Beneteau’s factory in Marion, South Carolina. Some of its features include an extended cockpit to give students and instructors more room, a rig designed specifically for sail training, and ergonomic and safety innovations to ensure that every sail is comfortable and safe.
The research and development team at Beneteau used input from ASA instructors, schools, and leading competitive sailors to refine and adapt the Finot, Conq & Associates design of its very successful First 20. This collaboration has produced a singularly modern sail training vessel to make learning how to sail easier, safer and more fun!
“Throughout the process, we have sought the input and feedback of a representative group of ASA affiliated schools and instructors. Since they have influenced the initial design of the boat and continue to offer valuable input, we’re confident the new ASA First 22 will be a great success,” noted Lenny Shabes, ASA’s founder and chairman of the board.
STRATEGIC POSITIONNING: “This project is particularly relevant and exciting to Beneteau; building small sailing vessels to invite more people to experience the thrill of sailing is exactly what our company’s success is built upon,” explained Laurent Fabre, President of Beneteau America. “We feel very fortunate to partner with ASA to offer a new and exciting boat for their associated schools to attract new sailors. We’re confident this new vessel will enhance their students’ and instructors’ time on the water. And it’s just the beginning!” The ASA First 22 will be offered at $29,900 MSRP.
Fabre further explained that Beneteau America negotiated a leasing program exclusive to ASA affiliate schools to help them get equipped quickly, while minimizing the upfront investment.
The new ASA First 22 will be revealed at the 2014 Annapolis Sailboat Show, October 9th – 13th.
