1. Call for Proposals - CANDE SIG

CANDE SIG welcomes proposals in relation to democratic and citizenship education, in particular those that respond to the theme of this year’s conference: Ubuntu! Imagining a Humanist Education Globally.  Ubuntu!, humanist education and the global perspective are themes closely related to the focus of CANDE. What are the challenges and opportunities of thinking globally and what does it means to be a responsible citizen in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world? What do we know about policies, pedagogies and practices intended to foster the skills and values of compassion, tolerance and agency required for participation in this complex reality? How can democratic and citizenship education that fosters participatory citizenship be ensured for those children and youth who are experiencing dislocation, conflict, discrimination and inequality.

Up to four papers will be assigned per SIG panel. Proposals not selected for the CANDE SIG highlighted sessions will be considered for the general pool.  All proposals must be submitted via the CIES 2015 conference website on or before December 1st, 2014 (early bird deadline October 6th, 2014). To submit your proposal to the CANDE SIG, your membership dues must be paid in advance of registration. You can pay this fee through the online registration system. Select the CANDE SIG when submitting your proposal if you want to be considered for a highlighted panel. We kindly ask that you e-mail the CANDE co-chairs upon completing your registration and payment, as confirmation that you are a current member in good standing. The SIG Co-Chairs are Kristina Brezicha [kfb126@psu.edu] and Felisa Tibbitts [ftibbitts@hrea.org]. Those submitting proposals to the CANDE SIG will be asked to participate in the review of one or two submissions.

4. Call for Proposals - South Asia SIG

Namaste/Salaam from the Comparative and International Education Society South Asia Special Interest Group (CIES SASIG). The 59th annual CIES conference will be hosted in Washington, D.C. from March 8-13, 2015. The proposal deadlines are as follows:

Early bird submission deadline: October 6th, 2014 (strongly encouraged)
Final submission deadline: December 1st, 2014

The South Asia SIG is pleased to sponsor two highlighted sessions at the CIES 2015 conference. We invite individual papers and panel proposals that engage with the conference theme Ubuntu! Imagining a Humanist Education Globally. We welcome papers that draw on diverse epistemological, methodological, and theoretical perspectives. In particular, we are interested in (but are not limited to) papers that draw on issues impacting the achievement of the marginalized; issues in educational planning; empirical studies on teacher education and training; and, the works of indigenous scholars. While we welcome papers focusing on the South Asian Diaspora, we are especially interested in highlighting work that is being done within South Asia itself (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). SA SIG also is highly interested in highlighting the important work of practitioners working in the field.

Please refer to the conference’s main website which contains information links regarding: the overall conference’s Call for Papers; proposal guidelines; and, access to the online proposal submission system. It can be found at: http://cies2015.com/

In order to submit a proposal to the South Asia (or any other) SIG, you are required to be a dues-paying member of the SIG ($10 USD). You may pay $10 in dues when you register for the 2015 conference through the online registration system. We invite all CIES members to join the growing South Asia SIG at the time of conference registration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please consider sending all South Asia-specific proposals to the SIG. The SA SIG Conference Program Committee will be organizing accepted proposals not selected for the two SIG highlighted sessions into thematic sessions. Please note that group panel proposals (of up to 4 individual presentations) will be considered. All proposal will receive a double-blind review. Accepted proposals that cannot fit into themed sessions will be sent to the CIES general pool to be included elsewhere in the program. Our goal is to work with the CIES Conference Committee like we did last year to coordinate this effort which will result in the most representative and organized South Asia-focused CIES to date!

For SA SIG related questions regarding the 2015 Annual Meeting, please contact Program Chair Matthew Witenstein at matthew.witenstein@cgu.edu

Special Themed Highlighted Session:
For the second year in a row, there will be a special themed highlighted session as outlined below:
The definition of “marginalization” has changed over a 10 year period. The traditional approaches of marginalization in the region often looked at it from the point of the caste system, through economic marginalization or the gender lens. While we may have not found solutions to these issues, it is necessary to reframe and/or add to the former lens to include other forms of marginalization. Papers in this session should highlight many such factors of marginalization that have hampered either school participation or student learning. It will particularly focus on new ways of looking at marginalization that have not been well-researched in the sub-continent.

The focus of this South Asia Special Interest Group panel is on “Educational issues of the marginalized in South Asia”. The panel paper selection will be led by the SA SIG Conference Program Committee using a blind review process.

We look forward to receiving all SA SIG proposals for this special themed session as well as for the other highlighted session.
