Our Grand Prize Winners!

Two great examples here - one showing a common youth-friendly character placed near a tobacco display, which is at eye-level and within reach of youth. It even looks like a candy display!  Isn't the other ironic?  This sign at a Circle K invites CVS customers to buy tobacco products at their store. We applaud CVS for the decision to stop selling tobacco products and wish more stores would do the same. Tsk, tsk, Circle K!

What's all this for? Counter Tobacco's photo contest showcases tobacco industry promotional strategies at point of sale, including appeal to youth

The Surgeon General has concluded that "advertising and promotional activities by tobacco companies have been shown to cause the onset and continuation of smoking among adolescents and young adults." [1] The tobacco industry spends the majority of their marketing budget at the point of sale promoting its deadly products. [2] In particular, putting tobacco products next to advertisements for soft drinks, candy, and snacks are all tactics that can make tobacco more appealing to youth. CounterTobacco.org is dedicated to providing tools and resources to counteract retail tobacco product sales and marketing. The photo contest and image gallery expose the tactics used by the tobacco industry, helping to educate communities, and especially youth, about the dangers of this marketing. Education and exposing the industries' tactics is critical to building awareness and a first step in the policy change process. These photos offer tobacco control advocates a powerful tool to show what is happening at the point of sale.
