November Update

Go Geraldine 2015 and beyond - we want YOU!

The busy festive season is almost upon us but the Board of Go Geraldine are already looking towards 2015 and starting to plan activities for the benefit of the membership.  A key aspect of this is conducting succession planning to ensure the on-going strength and vitality of the Go Gerald Board.

Early next year, in conjunction with AGM notifications, the Board will be calling for nominations for the 2015/2016 Go Geraldine Board, with a view to having another 3-4 board members appointed following the AGM.

The on-going success of Go Geraldine is down to the quality, motivation and enthusiasm of its Board.  Go Geraldine needs people who are willing to get involved and make a contribution and we want you!

The current Board is looking for keen and interested members to consider standing for the Board at the next AGM.  If you are interested please contact Janene who will arrange for you to have a chat to a current Board member to find out more.

Join the Go Geraldine Board and contribute to the strategic development of the organisation that works for Geraldine!

The Christchurch
A & P Show 2014

Go Geraldine Coordinator, Janene Adams, will head up a combined team hosting the Go Geraldine Marquee at the highly popular Christchurch Show this coming week 12-14th Nov.

Janene will be joined by Jenny Timblick and Kaye Highton, both GG Board members as well as Jill Roberts from Events Geraldine and Ginny Bolderston from the Geraldine Visitor Centre.

All three organisations work together frequently on various projects but the Show is a wonderful opportunity for them to come together in a more visible way to promote Geraldine to the world.

The marquee will be packed full of Geraldine businesses showcasing their wares in the form of stalls, displays and tastings while Janene and the team will be talking generally to visitors about what a great place Geraldine is to live, work, play and stay.

Luckily people tend to have very positive memories and experiences of Geraldine but it is important to remind them that Geraldine is a great destination to visit, to put down roots or do business.

If you plan to be at the Show this year do make sure you pop into the Marquee on the corner of Deans Avenue and Robinson St and say hi to all the familiar faces from Geraldine!

Congratulations!

To Michael Jones of the Geraldine Butchery

Michael celebrated 25 years in business last week!  Go Geraldine would like to congratulate Michael and wish him all the best for the next 25 years!

Cruise Ship Arrivals

Over the summer holiday period four cruise ships are expected at Port Timaru:

Monday 29th Dec - MS Europa
Tuesday 30th Dec - Seabourn Odyssey
Sunday 11th January - Seven Seas Mariner
Sunday 1st Feb - Seabourn Odyssey

These ships cater for the high-end boutique part of the cruise market and typically accommodate 400-700 passengers versus 4000 plus on large mainstream ships.  Before arriving in a port, guests can choose between planned excursions organised by the Cruise Line or to spend their day exploring independently.

Geraldine is often used as a comfort stop for planned excursions but is also a highly desirable destination of choice for the independent cruise guests.  Cruise Lines make the decision to visit a port based on a number of factors, with a destination being seen as 'cruise friendly' being at the top of this list.  This means shops being open and welcoming.

If a Cruise Line receives a good report about a destination they are much more likely to choose to visit again and to increase the frequency of the visits and the number of planned excursions to that destinations.

How can Geraldine benefit from the Cruise Ships?  Businesses could ensure they are open on the days the ships are in port, have a welcome sign on the window or at the door, set up a stall table outside on the footpath offering special sale items of interest, be friendly and welcoming and informative.

For more information about Cruise Ships visiting please Janene.

Rangitata Noticeboards Get a Face Lift ...

For visitors driving south from Christchurch the information noticeboards situated across the road from the Rangitata Tearooms are often their first point of contact with Geraldine.  The notice boards were a project undertaken by the Geraldine Lions as a result of a request by the businesses of the town some years ago.

At that time the Lions leapt into action; raising funds and securing permissions to install a substantial construction on State Highway 1 that would promote Geraldine to passing visitors.  Over the years the noticeboards have sadly been vandalised: with the noticeboard glass broken and the area misused as a dumping ground for rubbish.

Recently the Go Geraldine Board approached the Lions to discuss the future of the noticeboards and once again the Lions have stepped in and are now in the process of undertaking full repairs on the noticeboards.

Garry Sheed from Fresh Choice has assisted by funding new vandal proof plexi-glass and soon the noticeboards will soon be ready once again to inform potential visitors about our great town.

The next step is to fill the noticeboards with information about the attractions Geraldine has to offer.  In the near future Janene Adams, Go Geraldine Coordinator, will be contacting local businesses seeking support to create interesting and informative information boards to be placed on the noticeboards letting visitors know all about what the town has to offer.

If you wish to promote your organisation on these noticeboards, express your early interest to Janene by email.
