Hello from Lisa, Soaringwords News, SoaringStar, SoaringHealth & Wellness, Be in Touch
Soaringwords
Dear <<First Name>>:

It was an action-packed summer at Soaringwords with many road trips and new adventures in healing and wellness.  My father and hero, Charlie Honig turned 80 years old on the Fourth of July and we held a big celebration with his “chosen family” at the Adler Center for Aphasia with a patriotic sing-along and touching tributes to Dad.

Even though my father struggles to grab the right words he understands everything and is fully present at all times. His sense of humor is always evident. He loves making wacky duck noises which never fails to delight and surprise children. As he passes them on the street he starts quacking away, the children turn around in their strollers looking for the duck! Dad's profound gratitude for the simple blessings of each day inspires me to embrace a sense of wonder for all that is well in my life. As we enter the fall season of renewal, wishing you much abundance, joy and gratitude.

Much love,
Lisa

Positive Psychology

This summer, I was honored to present Soaringwords' empirical research finding at two International Positive Psychology conferences. The energy of the European Conference on Positive Psychology reflected the vibrancy of the host city of Amsterdam with its incredible architecture, lively street life, and terrific food. The conference was located in the stunning Beurs van Berlage building in the center of town, complete with 100 foot clock tower, red brick and iron and glass work from 1903. The conference was 920 positive psychology practitioners strong, with almost as many attendees as the 1,000 canals that grace the city. MORE PHOTOS

Ten days after returning from Amsterdam, I packed my suitcase and flew to Ottawa. 400 attendees benefited from the Second Canadian Conference On Positive Psychology, a tour de force provided by Canadian Positive Psychology Association under the leadership of MAPP graduate Louisa Jewell, association president. This conference took place at the stunning Chateau Laurier overlooking the Houses of Parliament and canals.  MORE PHOTOS

SoaringGardens

Gardens were blossoming all over the place as New York Life Volunteers for Good employees created 100 lovely tissue paper gardens. Employees enjoyed making colorful flowers festooned with inspirational messages and words of hope to donate to patients at Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

JPMorgan Chase

This summer we continued to deepen our relationship with JPMorgan Chase by having two amazing events.

In Chicago, JPMorgan Chase Women’s Initiative (WIN) shared a team-building event where employees decorated SoaringQuilts® and SoaringPillows® for children at Sinai Children’s Hospital. (Photo left)

In Garden City, Long Island, dozens of employees escaped into the conference room to do something powerful for the hospitalized children at Winthrop Medical Center.  Together they decorated quilts and pillows with inspirational messages and artwork for the children. (Photo right) MORE PHOTOS

PASE at Pace

Soaringwords led an interactive workshop How To Partner with Leading Companies to Foster and Model Leadership and Wellness for Students at the Annual Partnership for After School Education (PASE) Conference held at Pace University in New York City.

The standing-room-only crowd enjoyed a behind-the-scenes workshop to help them bring service learning and employee mentors into after-school programming.

SoaringSpotlight

Thomas is a loved and loyal Soaringwords volunteer who traveled to New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina to lead dance classes for hospitalized children and students.

Thomas brings great enthusiasm and compassion to everything he does. At school dance programs he is a rock star. Forth and fifth graders gather around him and follow his every step.

This summer Thomas was part of the Soaringwords delegation in Orlando where he signed up instructors to volunteer to lead monthly classes for hospitalized children, families and hospital staff. Thomas always has a broad smile and expansive heart. He radiates love and enthusiasm to everyone he meets.

When he's not leading Zumba or other fitness classes around NYC, Thomas is working on his own non-profit organization Freedom Ladder. Freedom Ladder is committed to making the world safer for children through popular entertainment such as comic books. His current project ABOLITIONISTA, a manga comic book, educates children about the dangers of child sex trafficking and empowers them to protect themselves and their peers.

SoaringHealth & Wellness

Sitting is the new smoking. Sitting is suddenly getting all kinds of bad press because it is linked to circulation issues, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome disorders and obesity (Hamilton, Hamilton & Zderic). Just this week, The New York Times reported that sitting less can slow the aging process within cells and that standing up — even if you are standing still — can be good for you as well. This is certainly compelling. (NYTimes.com 9/17/14).

In Smarts and Stamina: The Busy Person’s Guide to Optimal Health and Performance, MJ Shaar and Kathryn Britton, recommend ten exercise avenues to get micro-bursts of activity into a busy work day such as STANDING UP each time you answer the phone, walking to the restroom that is the FURTHEST AWAY from your work station, or programming energy breaks into your day. Making these small changes has an instant and powerful impact on your energy. Don’t take our word for it, try it yourself and feel the difference.
