Director's Corner

Over the summer, Headmaster Wilson and department heads reflected on life at St. Albans over the 2013-14 school year and prepared reports, which may be found here. In reviewing them I hope you will find, as I did, that our School is as strong as ever.

The new school year began earlier this month with an Opening Day Cathedral Service featuring the now-established tradition of individual C Formers processing down the main nave flanked by Form VI boys. Photos from the day, as well as the text of the Headmaster’s homily can be found here, and may even take you back to your first day of school.

Two weeks in, with a brand new eight-day block schedule and our athletic fields closed for construction for the year, and the boys have adapted easily to the changes on campus. That Chapel is no longer first thing in the morning and Assembly isn’t necessarily on a Friday will take, for this alumnus, a little more time!

As always, my colleagues and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. Please keep in touch!

25th Annual Bulldog Golf Tournament

Tournament tee times are filling up fast!  Register you and/or your group online today and make plans to join us for the Twenty-Fifth Annual Vernon W. Holleman Jr.’54 Bulldog Golf Tournament, Sunday, October 26, 2014, at the Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, Maryland.  Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., lunch will be served at noon, tee off (shotgun start) is at 12:30 p.m., follow by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony and prize drawings.  For more information or to receive a tournament brochure, please contact Don Swagart ’76 at (202) 537-5289 or dswagart@cathedral.org.

All proceeds from the Vernon W. Holleman Bulldog Golf Tournament go to the Vernon W. Holleman Jr. ’54 Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship fund was created in 1999 with a gift from the estate of Vernon Holleman and provides financial aid to the sons of St. Albans alumni who would not ordinarily be able to afford the cost of tuition.

Alumni in the News

Jake Bradt ’12 was named to the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Crew All-American team (more here).

The Disney Soccer/National Soccer Coaches Association has named NYU freshman forward Nick Notaro ’14 Division III Men’s Player of the Week. The NCSAA reports: “Notaro had a dominant week for the [NYU] Violets, putting the squad on his shoulders and leading them to two victories and a 5-0 start to the season. During his offensive display at City College of New York on Wednesday, he scored two goals, both headers, and assisted on another during the Violets’ 4-0 win over the Beavers. ... Notaro now leads the Violets in both goals (4) and points (10).” Read more.

John Sullivan ’88 has produced an independent film entitled Fort Bliss, which will have its DC theatrical release at West End Cinema beginning Friday, September 26, 2014. Fort Bliss, which centers on the story of a decorated Army medic and single mother who returns home from an extended tour in Afghanistan, has already received a number of accolades and garnered early Oscar buzz for lead actress Michelle Monaghan. For those interested in learning more, John will offer a brief Q&A after the 7:00 p.m. screenings on Friday the 26th, Saturday the 27th, and Sunday the 28th.

2014-2015 Annual Giving

A record 46% of alumni collectively contributed over one million dollars to Annual Giving last year; impressive results that place us in the top percentile of our national peers. More importantly, such broad generosity demonstrates the enduring strength of our community’s commitment to each other and to the continued success of the teachers and learners on the Close today. Well done, and thank you!

As we begin year two of the STRIVE Campaign, of which Annual Giving is the first priority, we have set an ambitious goal of increasing participation to a 50%. Success in our endeavor will require the support of more than two-thousand alumni and is critical to sustaining the unique elements of a St. Albans education.

Please consider making as generous a gift as you are able to 2014-15 Annual Giving today. Your contribution will make a true and daily difference in the lives of the boys and their teachers. Thank you.

STRIVE Campaign Progress Report

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: STA’s Athletic Fields

Work on the athletic fields is in full swing. To see the progress, be sure to check out this stream of time-lapse photos of the fields under construction. As work continues, be sure to click on the screen option for a side-by-side comparison of multiple days.

The project will take one year to complete and will include a new multisport field with turf and stadium seating for 600, practice fields, a baseball field, a six-lane regulation track, seven tennis courts, and a tennis pavilion with locker rooms.

A Note from the STA Admissions Office

One of the best ways St. Albans attracts wonderful students is through word of mouth. If you have friends or neighbors interested in St. Albans, have them visit www.stalbansschool.org/admissions.
Our open house for grades 4-12 will be Sunday, November 23, 2014, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. (No registration need).

STA Partners with Harris Connect to Produce New Alumni Directory

St. Albans alumni change jobs, e-mail addresses, and locations frequently, often making it hard for the School to keep up with them. With this in mind, the Alumni Office has partnered once again with Harris Connect, a Virginia-based company that specializes in alumni publications and data management, to help us update and verify each alumnus’ contact information.

We are in the final stages of this project, which will conclude at the end of September. If you have not yet responded to a request from Harris Connect to confirm your contact information, please do so as soon as you are able so that the new directory (published in December) will be as accurate and complete as possible.

Please note: At the conclusion of this project, Harris Connect will provide St. Albans with the updated alumni contact information at no cost to the School. While all alumni are presented with the option to buy a hardcover version of the New 2014 St. Albans Alumni Directory, absolutely no purchase required.

Thank you in advance for your help. Should you have any questions, please contact the Alumni Office at 202-537-5593 or e-mail STA_Alumni@cathedral.org.
