Historically, women have been harshly discriminated against in sports and, because of this, some sociologists view sports as a battleground for a wider power struggle between men and women. Sociologist Michael Messner calls it “contested ideological territory." Messner's theory is that as women gain more presence in the workplace, sports has become "a potentially powerful cultural arena for the perpetuation of the ideology of male superiority and dominance." The Griffith REVIEW 40: Women & Power discusses the number of challenges women face trying to enter sport: "organised sport is a structure dominated by men and corporate interests, where physiological differences between men and women are highlighted, and where the media helps marginalize female athletes by describing them in terms of their physical desirability to men." And at the root of this gender inequality is the question of what it means to be a woman and how you can legitimately use your body. Then you throw in a queer body and it adds even greater depth to this conflict.

Join me and pro street skateboarder Lacey Baker as we adventure within these topics of gender and sports, specifically within the world of skateboarding where it is only this year that the Kimberly Diamond Cup has added a Women's Street event to their roster and where pro skaters have been known to make statements like "skateboarding is not for girls."

Not only is Lacey revolutionizing the world of skateboarding, I also consider her to be one of the most powerful psychokinetic beings in the world! Following this hour of adventuring within skateboarding, gender, feminism, and psychokinetic powers will be an hour of music djing with Lacey!
