Ross Introduces Federal Charter Legislation for NAI
The bill supports the NAI’s mission to benefit society by encouraging academic inventors
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sep. 22, 2014) – U.S. Representative Dennis Ross (R-FL) introduced H.R. 5650, which would grant federal charter to the National Academy of Inventors.
“The innovation that comes from new inventions and technologies discovered in our universities and research institutes has proven to be a key component in economic development in the United States and across the globe,†said Ross. “The bill recognizes the importance of invention and innovation to the success of the nation.â€
While a Congressional charter does not come with funding, if chartered by Congress, the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) will carry out the responsibilities delegated to its members, including investigating, researching, reviewing and providing reports on subjects related to innovation, intellectual property, translational research and commercialization, whenever called upon by any department of the government.
“Now, more than ever, we need American innovation and inventors to help drive the American economy,†said Ross. “The NAI serves an important national and public need in encouraging and supporting the translation of its members’ discoveries into inventions that benefit our nation, and society as a whole.â€
