What’s New? By Tim Finkle:  Last night we had our annual customer appreciation party down at the Youngstown boatyard.  It was very well attended by Youngstown customers and friends with plenty of food and beverage and even a band next to the river.  The band included customer and employee members.  Bruce and John did a great job organizing the event that has been a popular wind-down to the season.  It is a sign that haul-out is near, but it was another great summer in Youngstown.

This was my first summer back in the area since I left for school in 2000.  I could not be happier with my decision to move back to WNY.  The Tuesday and Wednesday night racing with family and friends, the weekend sailing up the river, the regattas home and away were things that I really missed living in New York City.  You can’t beat the summers we have here and I’m looking forward to doing it all again next year.  But we aren’t exactly done yet, we still have another month or so of fall sailing!

For those who may have procrastinated or just been too darn busy, this is a reminder to make your fall plans now.  This includes haul-out and storage contracts, work orders for end of season maintenance, winter cover, etc.  Is your cradle in good shape?  How about jackstands if you have them, they can rust out from the inside and fail.  If you store mast-up be sure that your halyards are secured away from the mast so they do not slap against the spar all winter.  We recommend a fitted winter cover but if you don’t go that route shrink-wrapping is OK too.  But before you button the boat up check to see that all is secure.  One thing that is often overlooked is engine maintenance, which is best done at lay-up time.  Oil and filter change, fuel filter change, and any other services recommended by the manufacturer.

Sept 19-21:  Stop by and see us this weekend!  Starting today the Buffalo Maritime Festival will run at Canalside:  We are preparing for this event that begins this afternoon all the way through Sunday afternoon.  We will have a booth onsite at the corner of Prime and Hanover Streets.  On display we will have a Trophy 19 power boat on a trailer as well as a Beneteau 48 on the dock nearby.

Canalside is a happening place now with all sorts of activities and special events taking place right at the foot of Downtown Buffalo next to the Naval Park.  For this event there will be music, food, vendors, exhibits and tours of the brig Niagara tall ship and a Coast Guard vessel.  As we get closer we will provide more details.  After decades of inactivity on Buffalo’s waterfront we are seeing signs of tangible growth and change.  Come on down and join in the fun and check out the area, you will be surprised.

Stories, News & Articles:

Newport Boat Show, By Don Finkle:  Last week I was pulling dual-duty, trying to bounce between the J70 Worlds and the Newport International Boatshow.  I was able to get out to watch the races on three days and spend parts of two days at the show.  Thanks to the generosity of a friend we had a 20' Boston Whaler Outrage to use which made it very tempting to play hooky.  In any case this article is about the Newport show which I had not been to in recent years.  It has always played second fiddle to Annapolis overall and to folks from our area in particular.  That is partly because Newport falls a month earlier while people in our area are still using their boats and busy getting kids to school and so forth.  Annapolis has been the larger show and the one where new models are more likely to be debuted.  Some time ago Newport opened to both sail and power and this has been a good thing.  The show is bigger and more impressive and in fact many boaters have an interest in both sail and power and in fact some own both types.  In any case I came away very impressed and decided that starting next year we need to have some presence in Newport as well as in Annapolis, although the latter will remain our primary fall show focus.

Alerion Display

The major players were all in Newport in addition to many specialty builders that we never see elsewhere.  We are personally fond of the type of boat that you commonly see in New England, more classic designs that look right floating in harbors there.  Sailboats such as the Alerion, Morris, Friendship, and powerboats like Back Cove, Sabre, Legacy to name a few.  Our builders each had a strong presence.  Jboats had a 111, 97, 95, 88 and 70, as well as an 88 and a 70 taking people out for rides.  C&C had the new 30 which was always swamped and the Redline 41.  C&C designer Mark Mills had come over from Ireland to meet and talk to customers.  The Alerion 41, 33 and 28 were there and looked beautiful as always.  Back Cove and Sabre had a very impressive display of models of their Downeast style powerboats.  And naturally Beneteau had a huge display of both sail and power.  We came away feeling very good about the products we represent.

C&C Display

There are usually some new models that do not make the Newport show in time but do make it for Annapolis.  Two examples from Beneteau will be the Oceanis 35 and the ASA 22.  The latter was designed with input from the American Sailing Assn specifically for sail training but is also intended to be a safe and inexpensive boat for day sailing and family use.  We think it is a great idea and look forward to seeing it in person next month.

Beneteau Display

One of the attractions of both the Newport and Annapolis shows is that they take place in two of the more famous sailing towns on the East Coast.  Loads of boats to look at, inside the show and in the harbor, and the restaurants and bars are fun and full of sailors.  You will run into others you know while there.  The traffic and parking are not great but the rest is worth it.

New Boats News:

Beneteau 38 on Display in Buffalo, Erie and Rochester:  We took delivery of our first Beneteau Oceanis 38 in the Cruiser version and it will be on display at RCR’s Rochester office.  We also have Oceanis 38s in the Weekender version that may be seen in Buffalo and Erie.  Those who have sailed and powered the boat rave about how well it performs and that it is deceptively quick.  The twin rudders provide extra control because when heeled the leeward rudder is in better water than a single rudder would be.  Let us show you what we mean.

Here is a video of the boat in the 3 options, Weekender, Cruiser, Day Sailor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH36pIM5sx4

The New Beneteau Oceanis 35: When in France last month Don was able to board the new Beneteau Oceanis 35, two of them in different configurations actually.  This boat is going to be a winner, very similar to the Oceanis 38 which has been the most popular Beneteau model in 2014.  Now we will be able to offer the best new cruising sailboats in the popular 35 and 38 foot size ranges, and each comes in several different versions.

The New Beneteau First ASA 22:  Beneteau and ASA Launch Training Vessel

ANNAPOLIS, Md., September 16 2014 – Beneteau America and the American Sailing Association (ASA) are announcing the World Premiere of the ASA First 22 at the upcoming Annapolis Sailboat Show, October 9-13 2014. Beneteau America and the ASA initially announced their partnership at last year’s Annapolis boat show and are now eager to reveal the fruit of their collaboration, a new ASA-exclusive sail training vessel using Beneteau’s popular First 20 as its inspiration.

THE PERFECT TRAINING VESSEL:  The new boat is being produced in the USA at Beneteau’s factory in Marion, South Carolina. Some of its features include an extended cockpit to give students and instructors more room, a rig designed specifically for sail training, and ergonomic and safety innovations to ensure that every sail is comfortable and safe.

The research and development team at Beneteau used input from ASA instructors, schools, and leading competitive sailors to refine and adapt the Finot, Conq & Associates design of its very successful First 20. This collaboration has produced a singularly modern sail training vessel to make learning how to sail easier, safer and more fun!

“Throughout the process, we have sought the input and feedback of a representative group of ASA affiliated schools and instructors. Since they have influenced the initial design of the boat and continue to offer valuable input, we’re confident the new ASA First 22 will be a great success,” noted Lenny Shabes, ASA’s founder and chairman of the board.

STRATEGIC POSITIONING:  This project is particularly relevant and exciting to Beneteau; building small sailing vessels to invite more people to experience the thrill of sailing is exactly what our company’s success is built upon,” explained Laurent Fabre, President of Beneteau America. “We feel very fortunate to partner with ASA to offer a new and exciting boat for their associated schools to attract new sailors. We’re confident this new vessel will enhance their students’ and instructors’ time on the water. And it’s just the beginning!”  The ASA First 22 will be offered at $29,900 MSRP.

Fabre further explained that Beneteau America negotiated a leasing program exclusive to ASA affiliate schools to help them get equipped quickly, while minimizing the upfront investment.

The new ASA First 22 will be revealed at the 2014 Annapolis Sailboat Show, October 9th – 13th.
