Oakwood Farmers’ Market+

The next Oakwood Farmers' Market+ will be held at the Oakwood Clock on Saturday 18th October between 9 am and 12:30 pm. As well as the regular stalls, this month's guest stallholders are: Come to the Roundhay Live stall to find out about the Roundhay and Oakwood Festival, which will take place between 25th October and 2nd November 2014. (Further details below.) To book this stall for your local group, please contact info@reap-leeds.org.uk.

The remaining market dates for 2014 are 15th November and 20th December.



Fracking talk and REAP AGM

The REAP AGM at 7 pm on Thursday 6th November will be followed at 8 pm by a talk and discussion session on Fracking from Professor Bruce Yardley. Come and find out more at Gledhow Sports and Social Club, Gledhow Lane, LS8 1NQ. All welcome. There will be refreshments.
 

REAP Garden Group

The Annual Autumn Plant and Seed Swap will take place at the Farmer's Market on 18th October. If you have any divisions or rooted cuttings of fruit or vegetables or perennial plants please bring them along to swap, as well as spare seed from your favourite flowers and vegetables. We will also be working on the Edible Bed: come and join us.

Roundhay and Oakwood Festival*

The first Roundhay and Oakwood Festival will take place from 25th October to 2nd November 2014 and features comedy, art installations, author events, Halloween activities, craft, taster sessions, cream teas, clandestine cake tasting, murder mystery, films, children’s story time, history talks and much more, taking place in locations across Roundhay and Oakwood. Leaflets and further information will be available at the market.
 

Films at the Festival*

REAP's contributions to the Festival include a special Storytime for 3-6-year-olds at Oakwood Library from 2 to 3 pm on Thursday 30th October, and the premiere of the US climate-change film The Wisdom to Survive at 7:30 pm on Friday 31st October at Oakwood Church, Springwood Road, LS8 2QA. This is free and all are welcome. Oakwood Church is also screening an evening of short films from Aardman Animations on Thursday 30th October from 7 to 8:30 pm: fun for all the family and also free.
 

Events in Roundhay Park in October*

Once again, our thanks to the Friends of Roundhay Park for this round-up of events in the park. To receive their monthly round-up of events contact John Ferguson.

  • Thursday 23rd October: Friends' Working Party; meet at the Mansion carpark, 10 am - all welcome
  • Saturday 25th October: free tennis coaching for adults and children; tennis courts, 2-4 pm
  • Sunday 26th October: Nifty Nettles: find out why they are valuable to wildlife and to us in a hands-on session organised by the RSPB; Lakeside Cafe, 10 am
  • Wednesday 29th OctoberBatty Bats and Scary Spiders: make a Halloween bat and learn about the bats and spiders that live in Tropical World; workshop marquee outside Tropical World, 1 pm
Regular events

Half-term events in Leeds*

There is plenty going on in the city between Saturday 25th October and Sunday 2nd November: as well as the Roundhay and Oakwood Festival and events in Roundhay Park, other activities include: making scary skeleton hands at the Thackray Museum, orcs and zombies at The Royal Armouries, a family arts festival at The Tetley, Private Peaceful and Peppa Pig at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Northern Ballet's Elves and the Shoemaker, and family shows at The Carriageworks, plus activities in Leeds' Parks, Libraries, Museums and Galleries.
 

Bonfire Night in Roundhay Park*

The Roundhay Park bonfire will be lit at 7:30 pm on Wednesday 5th November in Soldiers' Field, and the fireworks will start at 8 pm. Leeds City Council have asked people not to bring sparklers into the area around the bonfire.

Climate change lectures*

The current series of Royal Meteorological Society public lectures at Leeds University focuses on climate change. On 18th November Gordon Rogers, Strategy Manager at Yorkshire Water, will be explaining their plans for the next 25 years when he speaks about Maintaining Essential Water Services in a Changing Climate. Lectures take place at the School of Earth and The Environment at 7pm, with tea and coffee from 6pm. All welcome.
