A note from the:

Executive  Director

Have you noticed? Philadelphia is on a roll!

This month has seen a plethora of new sites inaugurated or celebrated. Spruce Harbor Park voted a top in city beach destination; Dilworth Plaza, newly opened as a fun and functional place to be, in front of City Hall; the Schyulkill River walkway soon to open as a heralded conduit and recreation area; Mananyuk's Venice Island recreation park not to mention WORLD Heritage Way inaugurated with Mayor Nutter on September 8th.

One person who had the vision to globally position Philadelphia is celebrated this month. Our Board Chair John Smith whom you will see profiled here, was recognized for his foresight at The World Trade Center Showcase on September 16th. His relentless efforts and laser like focus on the global entities in PHL have made the association what it is today. There will be more to tell as we prepare for GlobalPhilly2015 and as the World Heritage opportunity unfolds for Philadelphia.

In other news the Association has learned that Ciao Philadelphia! Will celebrate the city's Italian heritage over one month in October this year; the Hermione, Lafayette's ship, will be in Philadelphia on June 26  2015 for 3 days; and The Philadelphia Orchestra will be in 6 European cities next Spring offering lots of great global branding opportunities for area corporations.

It would appear that there has not been a better time to be living or visiting Philadelphia in recent history. The city is filled with talent, energy and groups brimming with ideas and momentum to propel our fine city forward. Of course there are challenges, but there are also solutions. It is that can-do American spirit with a pinch of global oomph that one finds dominating the Philadelphia landscape.

We at GPA are one part of that energy. If global is in your tool box and international in your DNA, look to become more involved.  On October 28th at 5PM we will hold an Open House during which you can learn more about us, meet other international folk and share your information in our Global Marketplace. The  talented multilingual global team members of the GPA will be happy to show you around.

Send us your thoughts! We are here to listen,
Sincerely,

Zabeth Teelucksingh

What Could Scottish Independence Mean for Its Businesses ?

Today Scotland will be voting for—or against—independence. At this point, it is unclear exactly what independence would mean, and whether or not this dream will become reality. What is clear is that many Scottish businesses find their largest markets in the UK, and that Scottish exports overall are highly dependent on their UK market; something which may not survive independence.
For instance some businesses that are currently located in Scotland have stated that they will relocate to the UK in the event of independence. This includes the Royal Bank of Scotland—the parent company of Citizen’s Bank (one of our GPA members)—and Lloyds TSB. The move will be necessary in order to  insure continued protection from the Bank of England who bailed RBS and Lloyds out during the 2008 financial crisis.

Regional Spotlight:

India

In this month’s edition of the Insider the Global Philadelphia Association is spotlighting India. India is home to roughly 1/6 of the world’s population with a estimated 1.252 billion people calling India, the world’s largest democracy, home. The share size of India alone allows it to command presence on the global stage.

Along with China, India has emerged as one of two great growth economies of the 21st Century. The emergence of India as an economic power has made it a key player regarding major international issues such as trade, climate change, energy and global security.

India's large pool of  highly educated and often English speaking youth population has made India a prime destination for foreign direct investment, business growth, and entrepreneurial innovation.

Outside of the country of India its diaspora population, the second largest in the world, of 25 million has promoted Indian soft power by spreading Indian culture through out the world. Anywhere there is a sizable Indian population one can find Indian food, dress, art, and etc. Here in the Greater Philadelphia area home to the 9th largest Indian-American population the Festival of India that takes place every year is one of the highlights of the summer. Of course one can't speak of the spread of soft power without mentioning Bollywood which in some countries like Nigeria has a massive following despite lacking a large Indian diaspora.

While India still faces many socioeconomic problems the fact that India the world's largest democracy and one of the most diverse countries in the world has managed to become a major player on the world stage is a true miracle proving wrong long held assumptions about modern states. For many scholars have thought that nations especially heterogeneous ones can't possible succeed with a democratic system of government. India has shown that democracy and development can coexist with one another.

With India being one the major growth economies in the world and possessing a large diaspora population means GPA members are connected and/or have an interest in India's story.

Introducing Global Gateways

Global Gateways is the Global Philadelphia Association's new venture that was launched in January. This initiative views each and every member of the Association as a "Global Gateway" for this international region.

What is it?
Global Gateways is a year-long program authored by the Association and its Members. Global Gateways is about connections, storytelling and trajectories. It is about giving our Members a chance to tell, in their own words, about their impacts and expertise as "Gateways" between the Philadelphia region and the world. One key implementation of the program is through a World Days Calendar: a dynamic, year-long agenda of internationally celebrated days tailored to our Members. The World Days Calendar will anchor the Global Gateways program throughout 2014.
Via our various web platforms, opportunities for collaborative events- and more- Global Gateways will promote and support our members in ways previously unexplored.

When is this happening?
It has already started. Global Gateways is the Association's latest Key Initiative and our website will be continuously updated with all of the "Gateways" events and news. Visit the Global Gateways page here

How do I get started?
