Parent Education Night
"What is Montessori Education?"
Thursday, October 2
5:30pm

Please join us as our faculty, led by Montessori Coordinator Karen Neary, kicks off our first Parent Education Night (PEN) of the school year.  The purpose of PEN is simple: to hear first hand from our childrens' educators how they are learning, so we in turn can better support them at home.  The first PEN is "What is Montessori Education?"   The purpose of this evening is to provide an overview of Montessori education including the history, the educational method, and core principles that make up the Montessori program at Oscar Mayer School.

As the faculty takes time to teach us -- the parents -- let's please come out and learn as a community. For planning purposes, if you will be attending, please email Karen Neary at kbneary@cps.edu.  Thank you.

Second Annual Food Drive
October 6-10

The second annual Oscar Mayer food drive will take place October 6-10. Students will each decorate a bag in art class to bring back full of non-perishable food items the following week. Like last year, volunteers will be on hand at the moving sidewalk the mornings of October 6, 7 and 8 to collect bags from families and on the playground each day to collect food from students before they enter the building.

All items collected will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which distributed more than 67 million pounds of food last year — the equivalent of 150,000 meals EVERY DAY. Last year Mayer students collected and donated more than 2,000 pounds of food. Most needed items include canned beans, tuna, canned chili, canned fruit and vegetables, stews, jelly, soups and pasta sauces.

We suggest involving your children in the process, taking them shopping with you, letting them choose the foods to donate and explaining to them how the food drive helps those in need. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

Pledge Drive 2014-2015 Above and Beyond...
Let's Get Started!

Our Pledge Drive funds ALL of those programs that are above and beyond the school budget. Last year this included Assistant Teachers in EC, EL1 so these students have a 14:1 student to teacher ratio! Our EL2 program has two Assistants and our middle schoolers ALL received ChromeBook laptops.  In addition, all of our special classes were funded-Art, Spanish, Drama....these things place Oscar Mayer Above and Beyond our peers.

Thank you to our early pledgers! We believe 100% participation is possible-we need you!

Show your support today!

Wellness & Sustainability News

FALL GARDEN:  This year we are going to plant a fall garden in the raised beds on the blacktop featuring kale, radishes, beets, cabbage and other cool weather loving veggies.  Fingers crossed we have a mild October and November.

NEW CHICKS:  The Oscar Mayer hens are going to be getting some new roommates soon!  We have three new chicks (well…teenagers now) who have been eating and growing and getting ready to merge with the hens.  How we will merge them??  Well, we have been getting lots of conflicting and somewhat confusing advice so we are going to wing it (pun intended).  Stay tuned!  Our new friends are one Buff Orpington and two Delaware's, a new breed for our coop.  What a grand and exciting experiment!!

FALL CHICKEN TRAINING DATES:  We will be holding three Fall Chicken Training dates in October.  If you and your family are interested in helping out with chicken duty, you need to attend a training session.  We will go over the in's and out's of taking care of the chickens (it's pretty easy actually) and make sure you have all of your questions answered before you take a week of chicken duty.  It's fun, educational and only takes about 30 minutes.  The dates and times are listed below.  Just click on the link to sign-up!

Tuesday, October 7th @ 9 a.m.
Thursday, October 9th @ 6 p.m.
Saturday, October 18th @ 9 a.m.
