Help us take a sector selfie!
There's been a lot of change in our sector over the last few years. Supporting People funding has been withdrawn or refocused in many places. Government is putting a greater emphasis on the importance of preventative services in improving health. New varieties of service have grown up around sheltered housing.

We need your help to get a national ‘sector selfie’ of sheltered and supported housing for older people.  How well are we coping with the changes?  Are cuts killing services – or driving efficiency?  Are older people benefiting or struggling to get support?  Please follow this link to complete the erosh sector selfie.  It’s a short online survey that’ll take you about 5 minutes.  It’s your chance to tell us what’s happening to your services and get your views heard by policymakers and politicians.

And please don’t stop there.  Forward the link to colleagues in other organisations. We want as many providers to complete it as possible - whether erosh members or not.  This will help erosh represent the views of our members and the sector, informing our priorities and lobbying.  The survey will close on Friday 31 October – so don’t delay!

Coming soon: New Service Impact Template tool from erosh
Do you:
  • Need to persuade commissioners of the value of your services?
  • Want to demonstrate to health and social services how you contribute to their targets and objectives?
  • Need an easier way to record and record evidence of what you achieve?
  • Need to work out how you save money for health and social services?
If you answered yes to any or all of the above, you need our new Service Impact Template which will provide service managers and frontline staff with a quick, easy-to-use framework for recording the evidence needed to demonstrate the value of your services to local authorities, statutory services, and other key stakeholders.

We all know the valuable contribution housing/related support for older people makes to the achievement of NHS, adult social care and public health outcomes as well as to cost savings. The challenge is demonstrating this.

Our Service Impact Template will be launched early in 2015 and will be available to both erosh members (50% discount) and non-members. To register your interest and find out more contact Rebecca Mollart, Chief Executive, erosh.

New Good Practice Case Studies now available on the erosh website
Check out 2 new Good Practice case studies on the erosh website from our 2014 1st and 2nd place award winners:

Riverside ECHG - Tenant Safeguarding Awareness Training
This initiative arose from an investigation in 2011/12 into safeguarding cases in the sheltered service. It became apparent that tenants had a lack of knowledge of adult safeguarding. Throughout the schemes, there are leaflets/posters providing information on how to report abuse but, although tenants knew how to report abuse, they were not always aware of the 'triggers' or 'types' of abuse and how perpetrators 'groom' victims. This gave rise to the development of a 'Tenant Safeguarding Awareness Programme' project group involving tenants and staff which considered how tenants’ awareness could be raised to reduce incidences of abuse.

RCT Homes – Summerdale Scrum
This is a sporting reminiscence project (with Beth Johnson Foundation and RSVP) aimed at enhancing the social lives of older people at Summerdale Close,Tonteg. It improves quality of life for older people using sporting memories and heritage and breaks down barriers between old and young.

Erosh with CIH Cymru & Sitra - new partnerships
Older People’s Housing 2014 - 1 day conference with CIH Cymru – 4/12/14, Cardiff
Older people's housing, in partnership with CIH Cymru, is a brand new conference for 2014.  This event will bring together frontline staff and managers working across housing services for older people.  The programme, developed with CIH Cymru and colleagues from the Erosh South Wales network, will maximise workshop time to focus on sharing new/good practice, change management success stories and professional development.  You will also learn about community and collaborative partnerships, emerging technologies and new initiatives from across the UK.

For more information and how to book click here.  Erosh members benefit from the discounted rate.

Building Bridges: New, emerging and changing job roles in Adult Social Care within the Extra Care Housing Sector - ½ day workshop with Sitra – 5 November 2014, Taunton; 18 November, Cambridge.
Sitra was commissioned by Skills for Care (the employer-led workforce development body for adult social care in England) to explore existing, emerging and new roles that bring together housing and social care. Sitra explored how roles are changing and where the bringing together of housing and care responsibilities in supported accommodation and floating support services is resulting in new roles. It also explored what this workforce looks like now, how it is changing, and what the workforce of the future will need to know. At this workshop, Sitra will share its findings and recommendations from the report.

These free briefing events are free of charge and normally for Sitra members. However, erosh is working closely with Sitra, drawing on respective expertise and specialisms, to develop services which benefit members of both organisations. We are delighted therefore that erosh members are invited to these free briefing events as a precursor to announcing later in the year our combined offer to members of both organisations.

Erosh Letter of Concern about The Archers on Radio 4
Fan of The Archers on Radio 4? We were disappointed that a recent episode used the term ‘warden controlled flat’ in the Heather Pritchard storyline. We feel it's an old fashioned, negative and inaccurate label for what is more appropriately referred to as sheltered or retirement housing. The best sheltered housing schemes are lively and vibrant communities and the idea that they are ‘controlled’ by a ‘warden’ is misleading. What do you think? We have sent a letter to the makers of the show ...read the full letter here.
