East West Link
Construction Contracts Signed
On Tuesday, Premier Denis Napthine unveiled the first stage of the East West Link project. This follows Monday's signing of contracts with the winning consortium, East West Connect.
East West Connect’s winning bid features benefits for the Victorian community including improved freeway design, striking urban architecture and a host of additional community benefits.
Key highlights include:
- 6.6 kilometres of new freeway standard road
- Twin 4.4 kilometre three lane tunnels connecting the Eastern Fwy and CityLink
- Two major freeway interchanges
- Around 3,700 jobs
- Walking and cycling initiatives
- Upgrades to parks, gardens and sporting grounds, including a wetlands expansion and water themed park.
East West Link's design builds on popular elements from Melbourne's existing freeways. A new green beam, 'sound tube 2.0' and soundwave are the major highlights, with a ribbon motif evident throughout the project's structures and tunnel entrances.
Work is expected to commence by the end of this year, with East West Link due to open to traffic in 2019.
The East West Connect consortium comprises Lend Lease, Bouygues, Acciona and Capella Capital. The consortium will finance, design, construct, operate and maintain East West Link for a 25 year period.
