New Restaurant and Bar Opens in Downtown Dayton
The Czarnecki family, proprietors of the acclaimed fine dining restaurant Joel Palmer House, opened a second restaurant in Dayton this past June. The Barlow Room is a family-friendly restaurant and bar featuring locally sourced foods and fresh, seasonal ingredients incorporated into signature menu items. Chris (pictured at right) and Mary Czarnecki undertook a major renovation of the building at 306 Ferry Street, and the gorgeous result features exposed brick walls, historic photos, a 1920s mahogany bar and giant picture-window views of the park. The Barlow Room is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to close. They have a special event planned in October. Play a Trivia Quiz while you socialize with friends new and old on Thursday, October 16th at 8pm at the restaurant and bar. Your knowledge could win you prizes!
The community is invited to share their memories of the historic Dayton First Baptist Church at an open house on Sunday, October 12th from 2 to 4pm at 301 Main Street in Dayton. The memories will be collected for a memory book. The church has undergone a historically sensitive renovation and a new structure with kitchen facilities is nearly completed in the rear of the property. The Block House Cafe, currently at 302 Ferry Street, will be relocating to the renovated property at 301 Main Street in November 2014.
Friday Nights Wrap
 This summer, Dayton celebrated our community, friends and family at Friday Nights events in our town square. Three hundred people attended each night on average. A big thank you to everyone who participated, to our businesses and the City who helped to sponsor the events, and especially to our volunteers who made it all happen!
Bands entertained the audiences with a variety of genres from bluegrass licks to 50s & 60s oldies tunes. Our downtown businesses offered delicious specials, local vendors displayed their wares, kids had fun creating art and playing in the park playground, and vintage car owners showed off their prized vehicles at Archie's Cruise Ins on Fourth Street. And, everyone got creative with hand made lanterns at our Lantern Parade at our finale night!
Friday Night goers expressed their feelings about Friday Nights in our attendee survey and Facebook page. A few comments:
- "It was wonderful.....just like when I was growing up"
- "We got lost and found Dayton. Went to one Friday night event and came back for the lantern night. So much fun!"
- "Great summer activity, we loved it! Can’t wait for next year."
- "What a wonderful thing you all have done here. We have come twice and this is now a standing date on Friday Nights!"

Upcoming Events
Adopt a Highway Clean Up on Sept. 27
Join the Dayton Community Development Association and community members in cleaning up Dayton's highways on Saturday, September 27th from 8-11 a.m. Bring your friends, neighbors, kids (age 16 and up) and family and help pick up trash along along 3rd Street/Wallace Rd./Hwy 221. Meet at the Block House Cafe at 8 a.m. (free coffee and courtesy of the Cafe!) and bring work gloves if you have them - the DCDA will provide trash bags and supplies. Oregon Main Street Conference on Oct. 1-3
Get ready to be inspired! The 2014 Oregon Main Street Conference will be held in McMinnville from Oct. 1-3 and offers proven ideas and strategies for preservation-based revitalization that is relevant to rural, mid-sized, and urban communities. This conference is a great way to look at the “big picture” of downtown revitalization by discovering fresh ideas and learning numerous ways to turn your historic downtown or neighborhood commercial district into a bustling center of activity. Sessions cover a variety of topics for both beginners and those with experience. The format includes walking tours, lectures, and networking time. Attendance is FREE for communities which are participating in the Oregon Main Street Network and to our Certified Local Government communities. (Dayton qualifies under both of those criteria.) Venues: Registration will take place at McMenamin's Hotel Oregon, 310 NE Evans Street. Sessions will be at various locations throughout downtown McMinnville.
Who Should Attend: Staff and volunteers of organizations focusing on downtown historic preservation and economic development, downtown business and property owners, government leaders, chamber of commerce professionals and volunteers, and others with an interest in the future of downtown will benefit from attending this conference.
Effective Organizations Workshop on Oct. 10/11 & Jan. 9/10
The Ford Institute Leadership Program will offer a free Effective Organizations workshop to interested citizens on October 10-11 and January 9-10. This interactive and fun workshop is designed to develop your skills and knowledge for leading and managing smart, effective organizations that make a bigger impact! This workshop is rich with practical information and opportunities for networking and peer learning.

- Board development & engagement
- Financial Management
- Fundraising
- Volunteer recruitment & program management
