In this month's briefing, we share our definition of success, explore challenges and opportunities in Turkey, and invite you to join us in weekly office hours.

Emerging markets are constantly and rapidly changing. Any business strategy which works today may not work tomorrow. This is one reason why “canned” advice and strategies for entering emerging markets are ineffective.  Simply providing you with a report on how to accomplish an objective is similar to giving you a map for a destination thousands of miles away (where roads are bumpy!), instead of a GPS system.
 
This is why we firmly believe in hands-on, active consulting.  Theoretical analysis is great - and some level of it is necessary - but that alone will not empower you to achieve your objectives. You need an advisor who is willing to be on the ground with you, to execute on ever-evolving strategies, and to guide you successfully towards profitable and sustainable business.  It is with great pride that we take on this role for our clients, and are happy to see that our efforts are paying off for them. 
 
No success is more meaningful to us than our clients’ emerging markets success.
 
Emerging Market Focus
Turkey

Turkey offers tremendous opportunity for US companies. As a geographical gateway between Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, it is a great place to dramatically increase the international reach and visibility of your company. Turkey is a growing economic powerhouse which has seen positive GDP growth in 9 out of the past 10 years [1]. Istanbul alone has a population of 14 million people, making it the 15th most populated city in the world - more populated than London, Paris, or Hong Kong [2]. With a median age of 30 [3], Turkey has a young and growing consumer population that needs your product or services.  
 
While the economic opportunity is considerable, promoting US goods and services in Turkey has clear challenges. Professional circles are very tightly knit, and even those at the executive level often do not speak English.  Relationships are essential, and take a particularly long time to form. That being said, once your company has formed strong relationships, they tend to be durable and of incredible value to your firm. SH International has a deep professional network in Turkey, including financial institutions, professional services, manufacturers, and distribution channels.  We enjoy leveraging this network for our clients. 
Another difficulty facing US companies can be high customs fees in some sectors and complex import regulations, making it of critical importance to have an effective and viable pricing strategy. A company already doing business in the EU will have fewer hurdles to face because of Turkey’s customs union with the EU. While we are passionate about helping US companies enter the Turkish market, we encourage our clients to diversify their market expansion strategy to also include other strong economies in the region with more liberal trade policies, such as the United Arab Emirates, profiled in last month’s briefing.
 
We currently have clients seeking to expand into Turkey in the following sectors:  pharmaceuticals, food and drink, cosmetics, and investments. Turkish companies in various sectors are also approaching us for assistance in establishing US partnerships and ventures.
