General European Highlights

5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress and the Future of Chemistry in Society
Europe´s biggest chemistry congress took place in Istanbul from 31 August to 4 September.
With topics ranging from nano-sciences to green energy and water, more than 1100 contributions were presented during this high profile event gathering chemists coming from almost 70 countries from all over the world.
The immense possibilities of chemistry presented at the 5th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress were of great relevance not only for the research community. These societal possibilities, which covered most of the EU2020 flagship initiatives, were also clearly meaningful for the environment, health, food, industry, SMEs, and energy production.
The following EuCheMS Chemistry Congress will take place in Seville, 2016.

Carlos Moedas proposed as the new Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science
On his mission letter to Carlos Moedas, Jean-Claude Juncker mentions some of the priorities for Research, Innovation and Science:
• Promoting the international excellence of the EU’s research and science and strengthening research capacities and innovation strategies.
• Mobilising innovative financial instruments available under Horizon 2020, facilitating investment in education, research and innovation infrastructure while maximising synergies with other priorities such as the European Energy Union by supporting research in energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies.
• Making sure that Commission proposals and activities are based on sound scientific evidence and contribute best to our jobs and growth agenda.
• Focusing more on applied research, with a greater participation of the private sector and a special focus on SMEs.

Italian Presidency Priorities Presented at ITRE Committee
The priorities of the Italian Council Presidency were outlined by Italian ministers to the Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament on 2 and 3 September.
The key priorities for the upcoming months will be decarbonising energy in the EU, identifying specific measures to boost energy supply security and establishing stable relations with third country.
Moreover, Italian minister for education, universities and research Stefania Giannini highlighted the importance of investing in research and training, achieving true mobility for researchers in the EU and promoting the “Partnership in Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area” (PRIMA).

The Effect of River Nutrients on Marine Life
A recently published JRC article describes the strong link between the nutrients in European rivers and marine productivity (up to fish production) in the Mediterranean Sea from 1960 to 2012.
The article is the first ever to describe a strong and significant correlation between river nutrient loads and biological production holding over a substantial time period in the Mediterranean Sea. It also provides the first quantitative evidence of the close relationship between chemical conditions, marine productivity and fish abundance in the basin. It postulates that such abundance is due primarily to environmental factors such as nutrient concentration.

EU-Russia Researchers' Mobility Forum
Partnership in science through mobility is the focus of the EU-Russia Researcher's Mobility Forum which will take place in Brussels on the 25 September. The event will showcase success stories from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA), a programme set up by the European Commission to support researchers in all phases of their careers and in all scientific disciplines, to improve their working conditions and to foster mobility across borders and sectors. Fellows who have benefited from MSCA funding will present their own work at a poster session combined with elevator pitch for an even greater impact and more dynamic presentation. The event will also feature special interdisciplinary sessions dedicated to health, climate change and nanotechnology research – main EU-Russia research areas covered by the MSCA.
