Registration Now Open for Free Online Course, "Technology Commercialization"

The TEAM master's program is offering its first MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) on Coursera. Mark Wilson, lecturer in entrepreneurship at the Simon Business School, will teach the course, Technology Commercialization, Part 1: Setting Up Your Idea Filtering System, which covers ways that high-technology ideas can turn into successful enterprises. Between developing an innovation creed and setting up an idea filter, the course will be great for anyone interested in technical entrepreneurship. The four-week course starts November 1. It is free to sign up and enroll. The course is available to anyone and everyone; Coursera offers courses for free to anyone across the globe.


Undergrad Internship Opportunity with Ovitz

Ovitz Corp., a student-founded company that designs innovative medical optical devices, is seeking a business, marketing, or related major undergraduate student intern for the fall 2014 semester. The intern will contribute to the creation of a marketing and business development strategy for Ovitz’s first product. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Business Development officer and Marketing Adviser to build Ovitz’ marketing operations

  • Aid in the development of strategic marketing plans for customers, investors, and other key stakeholders

  • Conduct research on selected customer segments

  • Collaborate in drafting and editing grant/business plan competition content

  • Maintain company’s social media and website

  • Attend weekly business meetings

Applicants should possess an entrepreneurial spirit, a willingness to learn, and a strong desire to better the world. The intern may be able to obtain academic credit for the internship. To apply, email your resume and cover letter to Ana Garcia.


Entrepreneurs-in-Residence Office Hours: 9/22-23

Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? You can meet with the University of Rochester Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) on Monday, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday, September 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Entrepreneurship. Our EIRs are Michael Wohl ’89, managing partner of ClimateHedge Investments and Greenspace Capital and a serial entrepreneur; and Gregg Steinberg, managing director of Charlemagne Global Advisory and serial entrepreneur. KEY Program Info Session: 9/22

Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) program at an information session on Monday, September 22 at 4 p.m. in Lattimore 306A. The program offers select students a fifth, tuition-free year of college to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The program is supported by the College and the Center for Entrepreneurship. Seniors will only be permitted to apply during the fall semester; the application deadline is November 3.


AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge

AT&T invites the local tech community to participate in the AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge, a two-month contest (running from September 10 – November 10) in which developers, coders, designers, artists, innovative thinkers and entrepreneurs will create intuitive and novel mobile apps that address social and civic issues in the western New York region. Interested teams must include at least one member who is a current resident of a WNY county or attends a higher education institution in the region. Top winners will receive prizes totaling $18,000 in cash. Learn more and sign up online. 


Techweek New York: 9/29-10/5

Techweek is hosting a seven-day series of events with a two-day technology conference and expo to bring together entrepreneurs, visionaries, and thought leaders to celebrate technology and innovation. There are 12 events offered throughout the week, including a hiring fair, a hackathon, a music festival, and a startup competition where teams can win up to $50K in seed money. View the full list of events. The conference will be held at 82 Mercer Street, New York, NY from September 29 to October 5. Email the CFE to learn about a 15% registration discount for University of Rochester students. 


Students: Get Your Venture Funded through NCIIA

Are you part of a university-based, student-led team developing a technology that solves important problems for people or the planet? Are you interested in figuring out a revenue-generating approach to getting your product into the market? Then apply online for entry into the NCIIA E-Team Program. The program offers:

  • Up to $25K in grant funding
  • Training and coaching on commercialization and venture development
  • $50K investment opportunity for eligible teams
  • Entry into a network of like-minded student entrepreneurs
  • Access to experts, advisors, and mentors
  • Opportunity to participate in the national Open Mids innovator showcase

Applications Now Being Accepted for Student Startup Madness

The application period is now open for Student Startup Madness 2014-15, seeking the best college digital media startups in America. The early admission period ends October 10.


Entrepreneurs' Bootcamp at Syracuse University: 10/18 - 11/22

Syracuse Entrepreneur's Bootcamp is a training program beneficial for current business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs who want to start a new venture or those wishing to grow an existing business. The bootcamp runs Saturdays this fall from 8:30 a.m. to noon for six weeks, October 18 - November 22. The cost to attend the Bootcamp is $675. Scholarships are available to cover partial tuition costs. Register online or email Lindsay Wickham at the SU Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship for more information.


SwitchPitch Event in NYC: 10/23

SwitchPitch is a role-reversal event where established companies pitch funded innovation projects to qualified startups looking for great partners. SwitchPitch NYC will take place on Thursday, October 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Microsoft Technology Center, 11 Times Square. Register online (fees range from $75 to $195).


Enter the Neuro Startup Challenge by 10/31

Enter the Neuro Startup Challenge which features 16 brain-related inventions that have commercial viability and are important to public health. The primary goal of the challenge is to stimulate the creation of startup businesses based upon these inventions. Learn more online. Initial entries are due October 31.


Pre-Seed Workshop Now Accepting Applications

UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop. Learn more about eligibility requirements and download an application.
