The New Church Sign is Lighting Up the Community!

We are receiving rave reviews about our new church sign from many in our community. The old sign was – well… it was old. It was dim, tattered, worn and outdated. Even the Wesleyan Church logo was old and no longer in use. Our new sign boldly states that we are a ministry of the Wesleyan Church and includes the new logo! It also includes the current church brand which looks modern and colorful. Our neighbors and others throughout the community have actually thanked us for beautifying the corner! In local stores people are commenting upon our beautiful new sign! They love it! It lights up the corner and calls attention to our building. On another note, we are missing a letter from the name of the church that’s actually on the building. If someone would like to help us locate and install a replacement letter, we’d love to see that done soon.

Worship Celebrations During September

September Message Series: Extravagant Community

September 21 - Extravagant Community: Grounded Through Spiritual Growth (Acts 2:41-47) …. Fellowship is just one of the important pieces in the building of extreme community. The church is the Body of Christ and it is different from any other organization on the planet! The difference is found in our growing relationship with Jesus. We must grow in our relationships with one another, but everything we do will be weak and superficial without growth in our relationship with the Head of the Body.
September 28 -Extravagant Community: Multiplying Missionality (Acts 2:41-47) …. The last element for extravagant community is missionality. In every community there must be service to one another and service to those outside of the community. A community is attractive to those on the outside if there is genuine concern for the members and a true passion to bring others into the fellowship.

Last Sunday...

Last Sunday Pastor Chris began a 3 part series called, Extravagant Community.  This series will be built around the activities of the Early Church found in Acts 2:41-47.

Pastor Chris began his message by addressing the need for true community in every body of believers, expressing that there are 3 major ingredients that create strong, healthy community in the church. In this message he proposed that Extravagant Community is fueled by fellowship. The Greek word from which we get our word fellowship is koinoia. The basic meaning behind the word koinonia is Communion by intimate participation.

PC shared 4 specific attributes of true fellowship derived from the church in Acts 2:
  1. True fellowship is/involves quality time with others.
  2. True fellowship is/involves intimate sharing.
  3. True fellowship is/involves action based caring.
  4. True fellowship is/provides a place of grace
The service concluded with a call intimate participation with others and a call to intimate participation with Christ through Communion. It was a powerful service because of His presence and His desire to fellowship with us! As our communion with God grows greater and deeper, so will our communion with the people in our lives.

CORE is Coming Soon!

CORE is coming soon!!
CORE is a progressive discipleship-focused educational program that is going to be launched in October.

The Christian Church in America needs to engage in serious educational efforts. By and large, professing Christians in America have become biblically illiterate and severely lack understanding of biblical principles for life and eternity. Most Christians do not know what they believe, why they believe what they believe and how those things relate to everyday life and faith. Christians have become perfect targets for the devil’s schemes and deception. If he can deceive and disarm professing Christians, he can inflict massive damage. Unfortunately, this is exactly what has happened in the U.S. The educational arm of the church used to be the Sunday School but for many years the Sunday School has been dying. Most churches no longer have a Sunday School as we once knew it.

CORE is a series of topical classes ("Community Groups") that will run in 2-month semesters on Wednesday nights. Each group will also have a missional focus on a specific community outreach service that will take place the last week of each semester.

Does this mean a change to our Sunday morning tradition, yes it does. When you take a step forward, you have to move from where you were standing. We have intentionally sought God's direction for Sunday mornings just as much as what we are planning for Wednesday night. We are very excited about the opportunities for people to grow with Christ, connect with others, and impact the community.

WATCH for CORE brochures and many announcements over the next few weeks! For more information, please contact our CORE Director, Marcee Richardson or Pastor Lisa, who is the Point Pastor for this ministry.

This Wednesday Night
(& a Little Information about CORE)

Pastor Chris will examine the second half of James, Chapter 2. He will also explain the course offerings and registration process for CORE to those interested. Making disciples is a major issue for almost every congregation! We want to remedy that problem here at Community! It is our desire to promote CORE and reach as many people as possible. Almost 50 people have already registered for a class. If you don’t understand CORE, please read about it on our website. You can also register for classes there. Since CORE is new to the congregation, there will be a relative amount of confusion about it. We want to help clear things up as much as possible. Please feel free to contact Marcee Richardson, Pastor Lisa or Pastor Chris. You can also read a little more about CORE in this newsletter.

“PURPLE FISH:
A Heart for Sharing Jesus”

“Be ready and God will send them to you. Be open and God will send you to them. Be willing and God will use you to make a difference.” From: Purple Fish Facebook Page

What is “Purple Fish” Training?  The people of Tyre and Greece would take to the seas in search of the Murex brandaris, a shellfish from which they would extract a rare purple dye––the Greek word kalchaino alluding to the hunt, ‘the search for the purple fish.

In Purple Fish: A Heart for Sharing Jesus, Mark O. Wilson utilizes the imagery of the purple fish as a metaphor for humanity’s search for ‘something of great value worth seeking that when discovered brings great delight.’ The purple fish ultimately is Jesus, and those who are in a relationship with Jesus––those who have found the Purple Fish––’are sent on a redemptive mission.’  A redemptive mission commonly referred to as ‘evangelism.’ According to Wilson, however, evangelism is ‘not a program or a project,’ but rather ‘a life.’ In other words, ‘Evangelism is simply how followers of Jesus interact with the world.’ Review by: Joshua Rhone

WHO WILL TRAIN: Rev. Mark Wilson the author of “PURPLE FISH: A Heart for Sharing Jesus” Mark is the lead pastor at Hayward Wesleyan Church. In this inspiring, practical book, Mark O. Wilson offers a fresh, new approach for sharing Christ with others, especially for those who feel inadequate and intimidated by witnessing. Purple Fish shows how it can be a delightful adventure of faith, filling your own soul in the process.

Have You Recently Become a Christian?

Many people have recently come to Christ for the first time or have rededicated their lives to Him. If you are one of those people, please share that with Pastor Chris or another staff member. We will not embarrass you in any way, but we want to celebrate with you, pray for you and support you.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Fall Launch this past Sunday! A special thanks to Dave Lehman for a night of laughter!

September:
Responsibility is showing you can be trusted by what you say and do.

Sept. 21st: Show you can be trusted by what you do
Sept. 28th: Show you can be trusted with more by taking care of what you have.

Encourage Our Missionaries

In the hallway outside of Faith Hall you will find a bulletin board that provides information about the missionaries we support here at Community Church. Please take time to go to Wesleyan.org and find the Global Partners link. You will find many of our missionaries listed there. Make the effort to find their contact information and send them an email or text to share your appreciation for their hard work in God’s Kingdom.

Community Cafe

This is just a note to thank everyone for their food and monetary donations that help “stock” our café supplies each Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. Although our café is always free to everyone, every little donation is helpful. If you would like to provide donations or help our café ministry in any way, you should connect with Renee Dyer. Watch for more cool changes in our café this fall!

Our Student Ministries Wing...

is a secure area on Sunday mornings. Our sole objective is to protect our children and to make sure their parents are confident that they are safe from any potential harm. All across our nation there have been terrible incidents which could have been avoided if children were not put at risk.  Please be understanding of our new security measures and help us care for the children that God has placed in our care.
