A Message to Parents and Families

Welcome to a new school year!

Parents are valued members of the University of Guelph-Humber family, and each fall, as we welcome new and returning students to campus, we consider the important role you play in supporting your student. This tri-annual newsletter allows us to provide you with the resources you need to allow your student to succeed.

Fall classes have now begun and we're glad to see students take on various leadership roles within the university community. There is a number of opportunities available to students, allowing them to run for a position on the student government the Guelph-Humber Student Association, join their program's academic society as a member or executive, take on a part-time campus job, or participate in any number of volunteer initiatives and student club activities.

It comes as no surprise that our school and programs continue to generate excitement within Canadian higher education. Macleans Magazine recently featured the U of GH, lauding the school for finding the "right formula" between applied and academic. Read the full article here.

Integrated learning, small class sizes, and a close-knit community really enable students to unlock their learning potential both inside and outside of the classroom.

All of these experiences can help to shape your student's path and future career goals. We use the mantra "Get Involved! Be Informed!" to encourage students to get involved with these extracurricular opportunities and take advantage of the different skills and connections to be gained. If your student is looking for ways to join the various activities on campus, the Student Life department offers a number of resources on their web page www.guelphhumber.ca/life.

On behalf of everyone at the University of Guelph-Humber I wish to say thank you for your continued support.

Leah Murdock
Department Head, Student Services

Learning Beyond the Classroom
“Our study abroad courses help
students to develop a broader
perspective and skill set they’ll need
upon graduation to be successful in
today’s global environment,” says
Acting Vice-Provost, Dr. Bragues.
“These opportunities, at the same
time, reinforce our commitment to
the application of academic material.”
The University of Guelph-Humber has announced new study abroad opportunities for its students.

2015 tentative courses include:
France â€“ Discover a more European notion of the good life ("la bonne vie") by exploring the tourism, fashion, and wine industries, among others, traveling through Paris, Nice, Monaco, and Cannes.
Ecuador â€“ Explore Darwinian Evolutionary Theory and Cultural Psychology in the very place Charles Darwin developed his theories.
London/Berlin â€“ Visit the historic cities of London and Berlin and learn about the uses of propaganda through media and film.
New Zealand â€“ Experience the application of exercise prescription, health promotion and the scientific study of Kinesiology in New Zealand.
Ireland â€“ Traveling through places like Dublin, Cork, and Belfast, students will interact with academics, police services, community groups, and agencies involved in civilian oversight of policing, governance, democracy, and human rights.
Italy â€“ Explore Italy's justice system while discovering the roots of a Western understanding of law through its Roman and Christian heritage.
Denmark â€“ Through this course, the students will visit an outdoor education classroom in Odense where children's play and their own productivity through self-discovery and use of "real tools" is key to development, providing students with an understanding of the country’s unique contribution to child development.
