Which startups are hot?
Hi all,
A frequent question we get from clients is about how they can identify which startups are hot. We just launched our Portfolio Momentum Dashboard and used an excerpt from Sequoia Capital's momentum dashboard to illustrate this.
We'd love your feedback on it.

That burning sensation
Two of my favorite VC bloggers are Fred Wilson of USV and Bill Gurley of Benchmark. Gurley had an interview yesterday in the WSJ talking about current frothiness and how folks are not discounting risk. In the interview, he says:
"In '01 or '09, you just wouldn't go take a job at a company that's burning $4 million a month. Today everyone does it without thinking."
Fred Wilson riffed on Gurley's points writing:
"At some point you have to build a real business, generate real profits, sustain the company without the largess of investor’s capital, and start producing value the old fashioned way."
Best,
Anand

P.S. We're pretty old-fashioned in case you're into that sort of thing.

Insights on venture capital
Interesting articles by venture capitalists or about investing and M&A.
The myth of venture capital. Shutterstock's Jon Oringer says 'we have created a tech culture that celebrates the act of securing capital as an achievement.'
Is community the newest pillar of the VC model? 'Name a VC that was founded in the last 10 years, and there’s a good chance they have someone who’s focused on community.
There's no such thing as raising too much money. Russian entrepreneur Maelle Gavet says she has yet to meet the founder who claims that he/she wishes they had raised less money.
Ways to think about watches. A16Z's Benedict Evans says the Apple Watch 'feels much like 2008, when it was clear you could do something with the iPhone, but no-one imagined Uber.'
A dozen things I learned from John Doerr. Tren Griffin walks through what he's learned from a Valley legend.
