About the image

At first glance, you may not see the face hidden amid the intricate patterns. Take another look. A young girl's obscured image offers a painful glimpse into the experience of being born into oppression. The artist, an 18-year-old Akha girl who grew up in Myanmar, was alienated because of her race and vulnerable to abuse. In her art, she expresses how full of sorrow she is—aware of life's beauty and bounty, yet unable to access it.
