October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness was originally peach-coloured?

In 1991, Charlotte Haley started hand-making peach-coloured ribbons with a post card that read:

The National Cancer Institute's annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up legislators and America by wearing this ribbon".

Charlotte started handing our thousands of these peach-coloured ribbons to promote breast cancer awareness.  It wasn't until Self magazine and cosmetics giant Estee Lauder got involved did the ribbon colour change.

It is reported that Self Magazine and Estee Lauder approached Charlotte to ask if they could use the peach ribbon in their campaigns.  Charlotte declined their offer, wanting to keep the peach-ribbon and what it represents less commercial and more grassroots.  The legal counsel for Self Magazine and Estee Lauder concluded that the ribbon could be used in the campaign without approval from Charlotte if the colour was changed from salmon to pink.

Charlotte Haley continued her campaign for breast cancer prevention until her death in early 2014 at the age of 91.  From: www.bcaction.com blog June 24, 2014 written by Caitlin C.
