The 2014 Ellie Awards - Saturday Dec 6th - Save the Date!

Greetings Editing Colleagues,

The Executive Committee are busy preparing for the ASE 'Ellie' awards. Thank you all for your entries. It's a huge year and a great response and we are looking forward to a fantastic party, so please save the date of: Saturday December 6th at the Paddington RSL.

Thank you as well to our judges who have agreed to be part of the awards this year. It's brilliant to have so many experienced and well known editors step forward to help make this event possible.

Our next event will be a screening of the comedy, The Little Death followed by a discussion with editor Christian Gazal. Watch this space for the venue and time. The Little Death was a huge hit at The Sydney Film Festival so if you missed it there, or want to hear Christian talk about his experiences in the flesh or even meet him... we'd love to see you.

Big Congratulations to editors Jane Moran (DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D) and Karen Johnson, (The Last Impresario). Both films received AACTA nominations for Best Feature Documentary. Congratulations also to all editors of the AACTA films nominated for Best Short Film.

We are gearing up for another AGM later this year so to anyone who is keen to have a say or get involved, please come along, no matter what your level of experience. The committee is hungry for input, discussion and collaboration.  It's a great way to meet other editors, share experiences and form networks.

Remember, it really is a matter of “What can you do for your Guild?”

Please let us know what you’d like to contribute or make available to share.

Regards,
Dany Cooper ASE
ASE President

State Updates

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Here in the West, Looking For Grace is halfway through shooting. This feature film is directed by Sue Brooks and edited by Peter Carrodus ASE. It stars Richard Roxburgh, Radha Mitchell and Myles Pollard. And another locally produced feature is in the cinemas now. Go and see The Reckoning directed by John V. Soto and edited by Regg Skwarko: http://www.filmink.com.au/reviews/the-reckoning-film/

Regg is currently editing his next feature film The Pineville Heist - shot in Canada and Perth.
And the big news from the recent CinefestOZ was that Robert Connolly's Paper Planes took out the richest film prize in Australia. Voted best film at the festival it was awarded a $100,000 cash prize.  The film was edited by the unstoppable Nick Meyers ASE. Read about it here.

And finally, the ScreenWest Infrastructure review "Focus On The Future" has recently been released. You can check it out here.

Meet The Member: Andy Marsh

Andy Marsh works in both the documentary filmmaking and education space. When he is not in production mode he can found standing in front of students encouraging them to refine their scripts, re-shoot their significant scenes and to search for the narrative on their timeline. His most recent work is a four part Documentary series about Electric Superbike Racing in Australia. Presently he is working on a new series about Australia's quest for zero emissions.

I knew I wanted to work in post when…
I witnessed the Kuleshov effect for the first time. After studying TV and Media under the Faculty of Journalism at GCD, Ireland, I realised the power of the moving image. I became entranced by the notion that a story can be told 'simply' by the juxtaposition of images. Primarily, my work has been in the documentary space and there is no greater challenge than editing documentary. There is something special about taking what seems like an insurmountable amount of footage and weaving a story through it. I'm always humbled by how simple it looks when complete. Only the editor knows how much work goes into such a tapestry.

My first break in the industry was…
When I initiated a relatively large independent project with my business partner and a very small crew. After numerous trips to AFTRS for training, advice and some failed funding initiatives we decided to take the plunge and go fully independent. With zero budget and a tenacity that would not let go we pushed on for 10 months until finally we had completed four 24 minute episodes. It was not an easy task but our efforts were justified when we were nominated for a TV award. Priceless.

The thing I love most about editing is…
The complexity and the simplicity. Complexity in the raw footage and simplicity in the finished work. It's true to say that editing is an invisible art form. We work so hard to make ourselves disappear into the narrative. Finding and maintaining that suspension of disbelief is a life long challenge. Editing is a strange form of meditation. You need to see the future and the past but you can only work in the present. That frame just beneath the playhead. It's about aligning the narrative in your mind with what's on the timeline and using your intuition to drive the story forward.

The best tip I’ve got for aspiring editors is…
To read Walter Murch and follow his six rules of editing. Emotion is King above all else. Recognise that the difference between an assembly edit and a final cut is years of experience and an inner understanding of the human psyche. Editing takes place on a mechanical device but editing is far from a mechanical process. Immerse yourself in your footage. Spend time with each shot looking for Bresson's decisive moment and don't forget to blink!

If I wasn’t in postproduction I’d be…
On location, filming or reading Moving Pictures, by Terry Pratchett.

Luke Dickinson, NSW

I’ve been editing for around six years, starting off as a corporate editor working on web videos and VNRs, and now as a freelancer doing TVCs, television and short film. Feature film editing is definitely my focus, so at the moment I’m trying to take projects that will push me in that direction. Just today I signed up to be the editor for a crew working on a film for the 48 Hour Film Project this weekend. Should be interesting!

I knew I wanted to work in post when…
I had my first editing assignment while studying film and television. Not only was it a lot of fun, but finding the right timing for shots and cuts felt very natural to me. Editing’s mix of technical and creative aspects was something I found very enjoyable.

My first break in the industry was…
Working for a small PR company doing corporate editing. Their previous editor had completed the same course as I was doing at the time, so the company called the college to interview potential replacements. By the time I started he had already left, so I was thrown in the deep end on day one. While it was a challenge to learn everything as I went, it also meant I had free reign to create new workflows. It was a great experience to have before going freelance.

The thing I love most about editing is…
Even when you have a script to work to, every edit is an unsolved puzzle. Solving the puzzle of how best to tell the story is what I love most about editing. Whether it’s by nailing a difficult cut, getting your shot selection and timing right, or creating smooth audio transitions that “sell” an edit, solving the problem is a really satisfying process. Even better is when you get to watch your work invoke a response in your audience.

The best tip I’ve got for aspiring editors is...
Immerse yourself in the industry. Network. Find like-minded people to collaborate with. Read articles on editing and learn new techniques through tutorials or watching other people’s work. Above all, find something to edit and then show it to someone. It’s amazing how quickly you realise exactly what works and what doesn’t when someone else is watching your edit.

If I wasn’t in postproduction I’d be…
In cinematography. I love shot composition!

Meet The Committee: Lucy Paplinska, VIC

I knew I wanted to work in post when…
I attended my first Open Channel course years ago, back when it was tape to tape editing... even in my first extremely clunky days I could see that there was something magical and enthralling in the editing process.

I specialise in…
I've worked a lot in documentary but have taken my first small steps into drama as an assistant in the past couple of years and have really enjoyed the different mindset it involves - I love the idea of comedic timing for instance, something you don't get to experiment with that much in documentary!

My first break in the industry was…
I've been interested in both directing and editing for a long time and I come from a doco directing background. I directed my first TV documentary fresh out of VCA film school in 2004, that was an amazing opportunity. I made a conscious decision to concentrate on post production about 3 years ago and got my first assisting job on Anatomy at Matchbox Pictures, and have done a large variety of editing and assistant work since then - doco, drama and corporate.

The highlight of my career so far…
It's hard to pinpoint one thing but I would say that getting to assist on the 1st series of Nowhere Boys was really fascinating as that was my first experience in drama, and I learned a lot. I've also really enjoyed meeting others in the editing community and learning from experienced editors and assistants like Mark Atkin ASE and Annabelle Johnson. In saying that I am currently in the extremely lucky position of directing a one-hour broadcast documentary for ABCTV so that's certainly exciting!

I was inspired to join the ASE committee…
I always feel it's important to give back and become involved in any community that I become a part of.

The ASE is important…
It's very important to have an organisation such as the ASE to promote a sense of community and share knowledge and experience. The events organised are very interesting and worthwhile to attend, and they always extend my understanding of the craft. Finding out about work is also useful!
